HEI Questions
When did they start putting the HEI's in our trucks and how would I know if I have one. Just pop the cap and have a look see...mine is a Delco cap but not sure if it is electronic.

stllookn,
I'm not sure when GM started using HEI. I think it was in the late 70's. To find out if you have a late model one remove the spark plug wire cap. Under the cap check for either points (round thingy) or a flat module that is kinda moon shape. If you have a module then its a late model HEI. What is the year model of your truck? Is it the original engine? ------------------ Gerardo 1983 Custom Truck TX Plates: "BAD BOW" http://www.geocities.com/abetterchemist/ |

how many plug wires attach to your distributor? if its only 8 then its HEI if it has nine the ninth one being a coil wire(RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF CAP) it has points ------------------ 71 Custom/10 lb fleet .040 over 350/th350 good ol 1 wheel peel 3.73 12 bolt 275/60/15 front 31x10.50 rear on GMC Safari wheels #3 Dale Earnhardt will live forever in our hearts and memories "THE WORLD'S GREATEST RACE CAR DRIVER EVER"

Bur is right. 8 it's hei...9 it is crappy points. Then you'll notice the HEI has a massive cap verses the points cap.

Mine is a '77 but with a replacement rebuilt engine. The origninal was a 305 and it now has a 350...the guy I got the truck from was not sure about anything...he just took really good care of it. The engine has a cam...can tell from the idle, headers, Edelbrock carb and manifold and the rebuilt tranny has a shift kit. Seriously...this guy thought he had two door skins to go with the truck, just in case (small rust bubbles on bottom of door)...when I got there he had two brand new doors and wind wings still sealed in plastic as well a new bumper. I am very pleased but still trying to figure out everything that was done to the vehicle.

That was it...only eight wires...none on top for the monster coil so it is an HEI. Now I spend my time looking for casting numbers to find what year the block is and if it has Vortec heads...very unlikely.
