Seasons Greetings everyone. Sorry I've been out of touch. Hit a rough spot a while back. Between my 19 year old getting accidentally shot (he lived) and major surgery myself, being asked to live away from my own home for punching holes in the walls, (guys who've never lived with a woman take note) my father's failing health and lastly...having to put my truck up for sale!!.....it's been quite a year. But I'm bouncin' back!! My wife asked me to move back in, I'm fixin' the holes in the walls, my dad does not have to have surgery and my truck is idling in the driveway as I write this. Seems to be some water in the gas. It sat outside my mecanico's shop in sub freezing weather for a couple of days.(brake cylinders) Jonatan Lopez of Latin Auto in Monroe, N.C. The best and most for your money mechanic you will find within a 20 mile radius of Charlotte, N.C. Believe me...I've been ripped off plenty of times at shops all over the city. This guy used to rebuild N.Y.York City buses before coming to North Carolina. He works on all my vehicles for half what other shops want. Anyway...I digress. I'm getting some black smoke with white smoke and it runs rough as hell. I put in a yellow bottle of Heet last night. Changing the oil today and it smells strongly of gasoline. Anybody know what this might be?

Sounds like you had some rough times. Sorry to hear that. I'm glad you are bouncing back!!

Did you truck sit for a long while before this? I had these similar problems in the past with an '83. Old gas. Had to drain tank, blow out the lines and clean the carb. Another possiblity could be stuck floats. Sometimes you can get them unstuck by tapping the carb with a screwdriver handle. Good luck and welcome back! JC62

Black smoke is usually too much gas and white smoke is oil, so you may have more than one problem. One of the most common reasons for gas in the oil is a ruptured diaphram in the fuel pump, so that would be the first thing I'd replace.

I always believed that blue smoke = burning oil, black smoke = excess gas, and white smoke = coolant/water.

...I had a like problem "back in the day",,the diapharam in the fuel pump failed and pumped raw gas in with the oil,the oil pressure was droping while the oil level went up and thinned out,found it in time, changed out the fuel pump changed the oil all was good and got my engine really clean!!...

Glad to hear you're bouncing back from some hard times, and glad to hear your son survived the accident and seemingly in good health.

Thanks to all you well wishers. My boy is fine. He was two weeks away from basic training in the Air Force. They wont take him at this point and after getting shot, he's thinking twice about it anyway. Thanks for all the mechanical advise. The engine was flooding and I over cranked the needle while trying to adjust the float level on my Holley 2bbl. Stripped the needle threads smooth. Borrowed a float bowl form a friend while I look for another. I pulled the plugs and they were shot so I replaced them and put in a new fuel pump. She runs smoother than ever and I haven't even tuned the carb yet! Anybody have a Holley float bowl with a driver side fuel inlet? The passenger side inlet routes the aluminum gas tube just inches above my exhaust headers. This seems like a bad idea...yes?

Very bad idea, vapor lock sucks.
