hella headlights

i am looking to upgrade my lights i know there is already post on this. But i want to see if anyone has hella h-4 7" headlights. I want to know if they still have a bubbel to the lense or are they flat. Also i searched google to find a hella h-4 hid upgrade kit but couldnt find one. The reason for using on hella products is the quality, and sae standars and different from dot, and ive read that saposably the sae approved lights have a wider and crisper light. Any info on hella headlights would be appreciated

Re: hella headlights

The E-code Hella 7" headlights have flat lenses. I've used them on many VW projects.

Get them from an authorized dealer (Summit Racing), eBay Hellas are Chinese junk.

Re: hella headlights

How do those hella lights compare to Silverstars? I have silverstars in mine, but I'm on the lookout for a replacement for when one of mine burns out.

I'm debating between some of these hellas, or getting the late model jeep wrangler headlights.

The hellas have a replaceable bulb, and an availible 80w/100w bulb. and had bad luck with silver stars on my peterbilt good for 3/4 months and then quit, But they work great

I've noticed that about them... The sealed beam type silverstars I have seem to last pretty good (3 years) but the ones in the newer cars (1998)+ don't seem to make it past 6 mos. that sucks for such an expensive light.

My dad did try a new light he said is better then the silverstar ultras, they're called Philips X-treme Power. They say they're 80% brighter than stock vs everyone elses 50% brighter claim. he said they are brighter than silverstar ultras. If they last in his I'd get either the hella or jeeps lenses and those philips bulbs.

Re: hella headlights

To be DOT compliant, they can only be so bright, no matter what the bulb companies say. I run Ultra Silverstars on my firebird. These 80/130w hella bulbs are brighter and more natural compared to the white look of the silverstars.

If your going to put in overwattage bulbs, you will need a harness. Even with the stock bulbs I was loosing almost 2v on high beam.

Re: hella headlights

lets see if I can explane this so even I can understand what I wright.

hella is the manufacture just like sylvania or phillips
the h4 bulb is a europen class buld just like our 9003 they are both a non sealed beam light. the difference between the h4 and the 9003 light (not the bulb) is the way the light is reflected. what I've read the bulbs are the same

heres some reading I came up with in a quick search

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headlamp

I have a non brand name light that holds the h4/9003 bulb then I bought the sylvania siverstare bulbs in them and they work realy well

Re: hella headlights

All the E-code headlights I've ever seen have a flat lens (it is slightly curved but I'm calling it flat). Hella and In.Pro. are the two main manufacturers. I have been using them on VW bugs and early Rabbits for years.

In most states E-code lights won't pass vehicle inspection, but only if the inspector knows what he's looking at. GA and AL don't have safety inspection anymore so it's not a problem here.

If you're looking for a bubble-lens headlight that accepts an H4 type bulb I really don't know what to tell you. KC Daylighter used to make a 7" driving light (bubble lens) that some off-roaders used for headlights, but I haven't seen any of then in a good while.

Have you checked JC Whitney? Seriously, they have a bigger selection of headlights than anybody else I can think of.

Re: hella headlights

I remember eading somewhere on the h4 vs 9003 thing, that the H4's filament placement doesnt have as tight a standars as the 9003's so the light beam can vary more than the US likes. I'd just get a 9003 and not worry about it.

Also for the bubble type lens, you may look into the jeep wrangler lenses off the newer models. they fit our trucks and have a bubble to em, but its more bubble shaped than sealed beams.

Re: hella headlights

They look good!

I like the jeep option also because then you get NOS parts. However I've never gotten anything from hella that was crappy.
