Power steering gearbox leak
i have a leak coming out were the steering shaft meets the gearbox. Is there a oil ring or a something in there? Is that something that can be fixed?

Re: Power steering gearbox leak
It can be fixed. The only place I found parts for it was carquest. I have the part number at my garage, I'll see if I can find it for you.

Re: Power steering gearbox leak
Do you know how to replace it? Do you have to take it out or can you do it by just taking the steering shaft out? do you need any special tools or does it just pop out?

Re: Power steering gearbox leak
Not that hard to replace. Just did it on mine (easier if it's off the truck) but can be done with the box on. Just loosen the big outer lock nut then use a punch or large side angle needle nose to remove the input shaft retainer(you'll see too notches on either side of the shaft) Screw the shaft retainer out counterclockwise , remove the snap ring and replace the seals (2) then reinstall. Autozone part #7095 Duralast. Called a power steering input shaft seal kit. Really good detailed directions come with it too. Only $9.99

Re: Power steering gearbox leak
That part number I quoted above has fitment for trucks, cars, vans, and SUVs for many years. It's the proper lookup for the original poster's 86 model truck. It's even the same seal kit for my Dodge Cummins pickup. They all take Saginaw steering boxes. It's much more universal than most folks realize.

Re: Power steering gearbox leak
OK... so I picked up the seal kit and pulled the power steering box.
I removed the ragjoint and then removed the clip near the input shaft dust seal... NOW WHAT...? I was hoping that the input shaft seal could be replace without tearing down the whole box... but now I have no idea!?!
