I want to weld nuts into my frame before I finish boxing up the frame. If I weld a nut to the frame will it change the strength of the nut? How is this usually done?

Yes it will change the strength of the nut. It will anneal the temper, where it ends up depends on your welds Generally when you weld a nut on the inside of something it only needs to be tacked to hold it in place while there is no bolt in it. It should maintain a fair amount of strength with small tacks. If you weld all the way around then you might as well just get a gr 2 or 5.

Im about to do the same thing, Im going to use lower grade nuts that arent heat treated because I know for a fact grade 8's are heat treated, thus welding will change the metalurgy and probably make them brittle(how much I dont know) Maybe someone else can chime in with more info on this.

I amount they loose is completely dependent on the amount of time they are exposed to the arc so there is no diffinative answer. I the question is does the item really require grade 8 strength? If not don't worry about it. You could always bump up the grip size of the bolt to compensate for the loss of hardness, say go 1/2 or 7/16 instead of 3/8. I'm also a big fan of these. That's the way to go, I've purchased those locally at Fastenal and a Mom&Pop type operation.

Those will work, but if you don't need the floating nut for aglinment issues then it's kind of over kill. I use those for door hinges and and raised bed mounts.
