Rear tailgate glass...

So I have had my old suburban on the road for all of 5 days, and today after work I close the drivers door, and start walking inside and hear a loud bang. look around and don't see anything. So I go on my merry way. Well I get in the suburban to go to the store, and start it up and turn to back up only to find the rear glass is shattered. Well I guess I figured out what that loud bang was when I came home...

Re: Rear tailgate glass...

Kinda the same thing happened to me a couple years ago. I pulled up to a stop sign early in the a.m. and just as I took my foot off the brake the back glass exploded on me. I almost gave birth the the 5th marx brother... Skid. Turned out that the 4 mounting bolts for the regulator to the gate were either loose or had fallen out completely. Locktite on the bolts and a new PPG back glass later all was and is still good. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND getting an American made rear glass as the first one I got my hands of was made "South of the Border" and had way too much curvature to it that it would bind up so bad it would stop less than a quarter way up. So either one from a salvage yard or a PPG (Pittsburg Paint & Glass) unit.

Re: Rear tailgate glass...

How are the ones sold from LMC? I would like to keep the rear defroster. Which BTW I am wondering if that may have caused it since it was on while I ws driving with the freezing rain we were having... but I know the side "guides" or tracks are bad I the glass would flop a but when opening and closing the tailgate, so that may have made the glass weak.

Re: Rear tailgate glass...

personaly I wouldn't go with mail order glass. If it don't fit, then you're stuck with shipping to AND from the shipper. You can specify that you want a PPG brand WITH the rear defroster at a local auto glass shop.

Re: Rear tailgate glass...

Called the only "local" autoglass place today. Said he had to do some searching because apparently is computer was showing "no one has it in stock". I am assuming he means his vendors.

Re: Rear tailgate glass...

Well the tracks in the lower portion are shot... i.e. rusted out. Was going to replace them just had not gotten around to it yet... Going to take the remains of the window out this weekend and see what the rest of the hardware looks like.
