1986 Silverado
I have a loaded 86 Silverado. I want to change the "computer" controlled carb for a 600-650 vacuum secondary holley carb.
My question is, will my overdrive tranny and Cruise control still work the way they always have? ------------------

toadster9,
The ECS computer only manages your distributor. If you want to remove the control read this page. Your cruise has an independant computer located under the dash. Your 700R4 TV cable will be a bit tricky. First buy the Holley TV cable bracket. The stock bracket will be too small for the square bore carb. You want to have a straght line between the throttle and the TV cable. Are you going to change your intake? ------------------ Gerardo 1983 Custom Truck TX Plates: "BAD BOW" [This message has been edited by gchemist (edited March 22, 2002).] |

Thanks for the quick reply! (The link that was included on the email would not work.) Could you please attach again? I would really like to know how this effects the cruise. The other information given was a great help, I was hoping to use a adapter "plate" and not changing the intake. Do you have a reason for asking this, that I may need to know about?
Thanks again!

toadster9,
I fixed the link in my previous post. Since your are keeping your stock intake you should change the TV cable bracket too. I kept the original for my square bore Edelbrock and the alignment was not good. Unless you have a high performance stock intake I would change it too. If you change it you would take better advantage of your new secodary vacuum carb. A new intake will also remove the EGR valve if you don't have to pass emissions. If you keep your stock intake and have an EGR valve you may need to purchase an adapting plate. This plate will move your EGR valve further out and away from your carb. I've not mounted a Holley carb or bracket but if a TV bracket is made for the carb I would get one. What type of adapting plate are you going to use? I use a four swirl hole type. I like it. It helped increase low end torque on my truck. One more thing, the stock TV cable sucks when used with an aftermarket carb. I had to change the TV cable to a universal type so I could get the shifts right were I needed them. The factory cable works fine, I just wanted better shift adjustment. The cruise control will not be affected by any other computer. Just be sure to purchase the Holley adapting parts to use a cruise control. Are you keeping the stock air filter? You may need to raise the base with a spacer so your throttle plate will not hit or get stuck on the bottom of the air filter housing. ------------------ Gerardo 1983 Custom Truck TX Plates: "BAD BOW" |

Well, thanks again for the quick response! I have really enjoyed your site along with all the others linked to this one. I'm only thinking of a holley because there easy to get and rebuild. I have already have a blockoff plate on the EGR so that wont be an issue. The TV cable & bracket may be my only hurdle. I will continue with what you given me. If all goes as expected, Ill probably be back here asking more questions next week. LOL
Thanks again (this is a great place!!)

Toadster9,
Here is some more interesting reading in regards to the TV cable on aftermarket carbs. You'll find a post by me at the bottom of the post with some good pics. ------------------ Gerardo 1983 Custom Truck TX Plates: "BAD BOW" |
