Has anyone here pulled there vin tag off of the cab for painting and re-rivited it. I would like to know where to get the factory looking rivets.

Re: Vin tag removal

Its probably not cool in Oregon either , but ... On E-Bay I have found Factory Type Rivets to put your Vin Tag back on ... Personally I would'nt say a thing but thats just me ... My reasoning is that since I'm not transferring it to another vehicle , but possibly changing colors .. it would always bother me to know that somewhere on my car or truck the paint doesn't match .. Maybe I'm to anal on this but , I feel that
IF YOUR GONNA DO IT , DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME .. My 2 cents ..

Re: Vin tag removal

Do it. It's your truck, you aren't falsifying anything.

I have the same question 'bout original looking rivets, but for the capacity and paint code tag that's on the drivers kick panel.

Re: Vin tag removal

I agree, go for it - you know you aren't doing anything shifty. But I will admit, having run into vin troubles when I lived in MD (on a truck I ALMOST bought) - the idea of re-riveting the tag gives me the willys....

Here's a thought - take a pic of it and carefully document it before you remove it so you can wave it in anyone's face that gives you crap about it. That might come in handy...

Re: Vin tag removal

how many now work at the mvb that really know what an orig rivet looks like.
odds are that they will not find that info on their computer, so they won't know. the only drawback if someone ever checks it and you get some old fart who has been around for ages and still has access to the old books and looks in them. you would have a better chance of winning the lotto than anyone ever checking. then again that is why the bookies offer odds

Re: Vin tag removal

The original color of the truck should be under there. I think thats cool that some of the original paint is still on my truck. If you dont have the build sheet or sticker from the glove box you may not know what color it came. That will tell you.

You might check out this place.

I was just going to pop rivet mine back on. Never thought it'd be a problem. Doubt in oklahoma I'll have any issues at the tag office.

Re: Vin tag removal

I do believe that is illegal in most all states. However I have to agree with padresag, I doubt those that perform vehicle inspections know the difference between a regular pop rivet and the originals. You used to be able to find the original 'rosette' rivets on ebay. I believe the original rivets were stainless.

Re: Vin tag removal

Just be careful how you handle the tag when it's off the truck. I pulled mine about 12 years ago when I first painted the truck, and kept it in a binder. About 5 years ago our basement flooded and everything ended up in a shambles, and the tag is now lost somewhere in the house.

Re: Vin tag removal

In Missouri you can buy a permanent Historic plate. No inspection needed as long as you own the vehicle. Maybe your state offers this option.?.?

I see nothing wrong with doing it. It's going back on the same truck it came off of. You can find the rivets on ebay.

Found a ton of rivets on the bay, anyone know if these use a normal rivet gun or is it a special tool.

It is hard to see if they are hex rivets but they say NOS, I am assuming they are Hex, maybe I am wrong but those are the ones you need.

Re: Vin tag removal

I've seen many listed over the years, but apparently new rules do not allow the word "vin" in the ad, so they are now called GM, rosette, or OEM rivets and it's up to the buyer to figure out which ones are correct.

Here's the only current listing on eBay that I could find, but the price seems a bit incredible.

Re: Vin tag removal

I am at work, so cannot look at an actual rivet, but from the e-bay picture that markb01 posted, it looks like you could maybe take a plain rivet, and a small file, and make one that looks similar.

If I remember right, the one on my daughters truck is about to fall off. I know it is quite loose, and bent, so I may use this method to flatten it out and re-attach it.

Doubt they could tell up here in Maine either. I'm going to do it to mine. I also hate tape marks.

Re: Vin tag removal

I contacted the company below and sent them an email inquiring to purchase the rivits they state they sell, but got a weird answer.

"We only carry trim tag rivets as pictured on our website. Rosette rivets
(VIN tag rivets) are not available for sale."

I don't think it makes a differance what rivits I use, would it?
