I've seen the gray square gas doors on each bedside, whats the story?

Re: Factory tanks not in cab?? Need info and pics
I think they were all dealer or aftermarket installed. I had a pair of them on my 70. If I remember right, they each held somewhere around 10 or 12 gallons. There was a three-way valve on the floor by the drivers side door to switch tanks and a switch under the dash to change the sending units.
Later trucks (73-up) had dual tanks as a factory option. They had a rocker switch on the dash to switch both fuel flow and the sending unit. Last edited by truckster; 01-28-2011 at 01:43 AM. |

You should still have your main tank behind your seat, but like the above posts states, dealer installed saddle tanks, I have 2 and both are around 18 gal. a each.

You can kind of see the left side fuel door behind me, next pic; right side fuel door, you can barely see the bottom of the tank. I'll get you better pic this week end if you like.
then the fuel selector switch on the floor of the driver side, mine isn't marked but I know this is the position for my main tank.

Re: Factory tanks not in cab?? Need info and pics
I picked up a 1970 2wd lwb as a parts truck and it has the floor switch and the saddle tanks, however it does not have the access doors. The tanks were already removed when I got the truck and the only thing I can come up with is that the fill necks were located in the rear wheel wells. Anyone ever seen this? Would this type of set up be worth putting on my project?

Sometimes the filler neck went to the wheel well. Some just popped the neck out the body side with no doors. GM offered a driver side auxilary tank in '72 that filled near the top of the bedside, near the front. The cap came out of the body much like the K/5. There was a rear mounted tank in '69 that is rare to find.

@Constructor1, mine also has fillers under both rear wheel wells, they have fuel caps and are covered.
