I should be arrested for truck abuse.
Did a few dumb things today, I'm still a complete idiot when it comes to vehicles, maybe you guys can help me troubleshoot my trip from today.
1. Tranny had no fluid apparently, started shifting up and down between 4th and 3rd goin uphill, when I pulled off the highway it wouldn't shift outta first, then after 2 quarts of tranny fluid it felt better. go figure. 2. Since I hadn't driven it very long before, I didn't realize just how rusty my gas tank is. My clear fuel filter was %100 rusty red and wasn't letting enough fuel through to the carb. 3. Because I it wasn't getting enough fuel, I had to floor the pedal almost to get enough gas, which confused my 700r4 tv cable controlled transmission. Carb linkage was saying SHIFT SHIFT SHIFT, but the engine was starved. 4. Something happened because of all of that that made my engine start leaking oil. It would leave a good ounce or two of motor oil under the bell housing on the tranny after everytime I shut off the engine, but won't drip while driving around. Rear main leak? oil pan leak? So how bad might my transmission be messed up? It seems to shift ok now, but without a working speedo I can only guess shift speeds. Do I need to pull my carb and clean it out? Or can I get by with buying a new tank so it doesn't feed it rust anymore? I knew the carb was feeling bad so I replaced the fuel filter and it drove better for about 10 minutes, shifted fine, idled great and all. Then the choking, weird shifting, and turbulent idle started up again after it clogged up again I'm guessing. Before you guys get on me about driving it around with all those problems, I was in Mexico, I couldn't very well get towed home. I got there fine, then I realized I had problems and was in a different country. |

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
You should have picked up a bottle of Mescal and poured it in. That woulda cleaned the tank, filter, carb, and your truck wouldn't care if the transmission was messed up.

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
Tanks can be cleaned out and sealed. We do it on our farm tractors.
If it is a 350 check the oil line on the back of the intake by the distributor. Glad you made it back.

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
I had the same problem with my tank when I first bought my truck.(In the U.S.A. not in mexico LOL)I pulled my tank out,got some CLR,threw in a handfull of nuts and bolts(make sure you count how many go in)and slushed it around for2 days. Then I drained it,rinsed it with water 8xs and let it dry for a week, still running the same tank today.

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
I got laughed at for building a 2x4 gas tank rotisserie, but it let me sit next to it with a beer and spin the tank with a length of chain in it...

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
Thanks for the input guys. I think I might wait for a bit and buy a new tank to put under the bed, seems like as good a time to do the mod anyways.
This will eventually be a roadtrip truck, I hope, so I'll be taking down to Ensenada more often. |

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
I have been to southern Cali many times, and have even crossed the border myself numerous times,in Texas,Arizona and New Mexico. One thing I relized was crossing the border was like driving to the next town south to southerns of these states. Its like the next city south of them.

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
If you have a Q-jet you might have a filter in the carb also
and POR-15 makes a fuel tank liner kit http://www.por15.com/Fuel-System-Res...n/products/12/ I have not tried it but I like many others on here love just the normal POR-15 What part of San diego are you in?

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
I'm over in City Heights. Going to TJ isn't so bad if you stay outta downtown and away from cops. You can get stuff done right, and cheap, down there if you know where to look.

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
I commute over to market and 15 everyday to get my work truck. usually I take the bike, I'm in El Cajon and the round trip kills me with the chevy. and with the motor in need of rebuild I have to avoid the freeway right now.
My neighbor is working on a 72 also and he has family in TJ and gets a lot of work done cheap. Some of it I can see why its cheap. but a lot of it looks good.

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
Cool, I used to have an internship over on G and 13th. I'm thinking of starting to work on bikes now, never done it but it just seems easier to work with something so much smaller haha.

Don't let size fool you, but I also have a Gixxer not a Harley. I's sure it has more feet of Wire in it then the Chevy.

Re: I should be arrested for truck abuse.
My parents love mexico, there down there now buying a house or trying to get it to go through mexico is like any foren country, if you know people there and know where your going it can be a lot of fun and safe but if you dont then you can end up in a lot of trouble.
