Hinge Pocket Question
Can anyone tell me is the hinge pocket area on a 57 is closed in or open to the engine bay. Both side of mine are open and from inside you can see right out to the ground. Please see picture for a better idea of what i mean. I would think it should be closed in otherwise rain could get into the cab and onto inside of doors.

Re: Hinge Pocket Question
Definately closed, looks like someone has trimmed out the rusted part and there is a lot missing. I will shoot a picture of that area on mine tomorrow and post it. Replacement tin is now available for those, I had to make up my own.

Re: Hinge Pocket Question
I ordered those parts but they only go across the front side of the pillar but not back towards the firewall to close it in. I am wondering if they could be part # 12 from this link

I believe this is the piece you need. This pic is from the Brothers site. The #12 piece you are referring to looks like it is the part that parallels the frame that the part you need attaches to. Here's a pic of mine without it. I had to make my own as I couldn't find one at the time. Hope this helps. Kim |

Re: Hinge Pocket Question
Here is my corner front the firewall and engine sides. You can see the patch I made. I left a small opening in the bottom so any moisture that gets in can drain.

Re: Hinge Pocket Question
Hey OrrieG
I have the new piece shown above already and thought it went across the frontwhere it is yellow in the one pic. I will try it in that spot and see how it fits. where you made the patch is what I thought the #12 part was from this link http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/ca/full.aspx?Page=24 Posted via Mobile Device |

After looking at the new pics you posted I see what you are talking about now. It does look like part #12 may be what you need. It does look different than what the pieces that came out of mine looked like. This is what I made. And it installed. Kim |

Re: Hinge Pocket Question
I tried to cut in to mine with a hole saw because bottom hinge bolt "capture nut" was spinning (capture tabs rotted off). Area got rather mangled in the process. Planning on making a new piece to cover but it is rather an odd shape. Wonder what they do with this area on a "show truck"? Fortunately it mostly hides by inner and outer fenders.
I guess I need to repair the capture bolt or....... take the hinges off the door and put them back into the pillar as they were, and then cover. I am confused also about the top hinge bolts on both sides. They had regular hex nuts on the inside with no capture tabs. How did they originally get those nuts on since the pillars are enclosed ???? I guess I need to cut a hole in the top of the pillar on both sides to install capture nuts........what a pain!!! |

You can get to the top door hinge nuts through the kick panel inside the cab. My top ones don't have the caged nuts either and that's how I'm doing mine. The lowers are also accessible also. Kim |

Re: Hinge Pocket Question
This is how mine look. They are the originals. The drivers side has a rust hole in it that I have not fixed. You can also see how I ran my wires to hide them.

Re: Hinge Pocket Question
Here is a picture of mine from the inside out. First with the inner installed, then with the outer installed.
The inner pillar pocket is a structural piece, so be sure it is installed correctly and with quality welds. The outer is more of a cover, but also has some structural requirements. |

Re: Hinge Pocket Question
Thanks Guys. I was able to get in the garage and do some cutting and fitting up front.
I am far from done but I had the new piece in place and I can see what needs to be done. The inner and outer cab corners plus the rocker and step are in place with the help of this forum. The pictures and the help is appreciated huge. Mike |
