1960-66 Door Rebuild / Paint Sequence

Hoping you guys could help. What is the proper sequence of events when it comes to painting doors in regards to installing new door felts and weather stripping?

I assume:

• disassemble door components,
• remove door from truck,
• clean - repair - reinstall wing vent assemblies,
• re-paint,
• hang doors,
• install new felts,
• install new weatherstriping.

Show me the error of my plan...

You can do the felt with the door off or on. But that sounds about right either way. I am not pulling my doors, but I will prime/paint before I install new gear.

Good question, John. I've always been curious where the exterior and interior color meets.

I think I would risk the scratches and install the vent after paint.

I agree except I won't be doing a nice paint job on mine... just a fake patina deal. In reality I probably won't even pull the vent windows, or even remove the doors from the cab, like jimmydean suggested....

She's destined to be a beater... but I do want new rubber and felts due to the rattling. As I keep saying to myself, stay focused and remember the phrase: "That's good enough"

If you are replace everything in the window you will have to remove the wing vent first to get the window out, I would paint it with everything out and then put it back together. JMO Kieth

Ya know Kieth I have read that the wing vent has to be pulled out on other threads also? On my '65 the felts are totally worn away and the window isn't stuck in the lower track (you can lift it up). I took my window out a couple weeks ago, with the vent in place? But then again maybe the window isn't original and is small or ????.

Go figure.......

John to each his own but have read here on a coupe of threads where the builder has assembled the doors on a bench or table top which they had said made it much easier, can you patina the window area first then install felts, cranks and window then hang door?

Sure can. That's kind of why I was looking for input, just to establish a plan in my mind on what makes the most sense.

I painted mine totally dissasembled and off the truck. Let the paint cure so that it doesnt chip easily and put masking tape along the edges before re assembly, this will help to prevent scratches and chips. Hang your door and install your felts/weather stripping and glass. I have also painted the jams and then hung the doors before painting the outside. You then have a paint line on the jam but it isn't easy to see.
