77 c10 454 build up
Hello,
I'm building a stepside 1977 C10. Doesn't have anything really working on it. Been slowly replacing body parts (rocker panels, floor pans etc). Thinkin about the TKO600 not sure on what OD (.80 or .64). Will be a four link suspension btw. It's currently slammed and they way they did the rear is just ugly as heck. Jimmy rigged... I have a 12 bolt in it that the guy before me broke a tooth off with a SB 350. I have a 4 bolt 454 with a forged crank and rods. I have factory 820s that will receive 2.19-1.88 valves, bowl blend and mild port and polish. I'm waiting on a cc kit but should be around 8.5:1 - 9:1 CR (closer to 8.5:1 because I want 9:1 I'm sure..) I'm thinking 4.10s for gears due to an OD tranny. Kinda like alot of get up and go. Will be a weekend driver. Maybe once a year I MIGHT goto a dragstrip but I doubt it. So I'm thinkin about going with a magnum 270HR cam.. What do you guys think? Looks like a good match to my oval ports. I'd match that to a performer intake I think. To keep the heat cross overs.. Anyone block those heat crossovers in cold weather without ill effect? I know it's different but my bug wont run without em.. I also sometimes think about sticking a weiand 177 and a lunati H222/235 cam in her with some blower pistons. Be about a grand more because its a hyd tappet vs my selected roller cam. I'd be worried about running it to a 12 bolt truck axle... Anyone run a TKO-600 in their C10? Anyone got a 12 bolt truck axle with 454 power infront of it? Are the 3.73s or 4.10s any stronger?? I'm under the understanding there is a perfect balance between pinion and ring strength is why I ask. Anyone upgrade to a FF 14 bolt? I know they're heavy but that could help plant the power.. Be doing that if I supercharge it. I WOULD kinda like the option to run 87 if needed, sorta leaning towards the 270HR cam.. Does the 454 sit any higher than the 350? welcome to the site. I cannot answer the questions about lowered trucks and rears but im sure someone here can.. I also have never had a larger motor than a 350 in my trucks so im not sure about the motor height. I would however encourage you to post some pics of your truck and keep us updated on your progress

Re: 77 c10 454 build up
If I figure out how to post pics I'll post some. Been a journey already. Started off just wanting to slap a 350 in, the one I got was TBI 2 bolt truck motor. Then I stumbled across a 454 and it's sorta been a nightmare between junk parts and only one totally non performance oriented machinest in the WHOLE town (small town). All I've done so far is replace both cab corners, rocker panels (inner and outter), both floor pans and took the bed off. I next have to repair some cracks up front @ the steering box mount, may end up boxing that forward part of the frame in I dunno. Of course there's no motor or trans in it and I popped the rear diff cover off to look at the broken tooth. That's pretty much it though.
I think I asked to many questions at once. So I'll do one at a time. Anyone put a TKO-600 in their C10? I see they have kits for earlier ones but not for a 77 like mine. If anyone has I'd like details. Like I see there's three spots for shifter locations, what one was ended up used? Did you use a stick that was bent forward to clear the bench seat? Guess that's sorta more that one question but its just on one subject ;-) Greg |

Re: 77 c10 454 build up
With the compression you have you really would not need to change pistons, unless you have cast pistons and are planning on changing to forged for the blower...
I had that same cam in a 350 and it was pretty mild even in it... the 454 could tolerate alot more cam. I would look at the Extreme energy cams over the magnum series, due to the fact that the magnum is about 20 year older technology than the Extreme energy cams I run blocked crossovers and no choke in cold... takes longer to warm up... I have a 550 HP and 530 ft-lbs torque 408 SBC in front of a 12 Bolt truck rear.. with 3.73's works Great, and I drag race a lot. Take a look at this cam G6 XR282HR-10 it would also work great with the blower |

Re: 77 c10 454 build up
I love that cam. Just didn't think I had enough compression to run it. Also figured with the lowish LSA may have to worry with a blower.
The pistonss I have came with the block and are cast flat tops that's .060 over. I had to get a new block and went with a .030 over so I need pistons no matter what. Could I get away with running any old flat top forged pistons or should I use JE or Lunati blower pistons? $200 difference from reg forged and blower forged pistons, wonderin if it's worth it. So... I could run that cam NA and then add a supercharger on later? Greg |

I replaced my 305 with a 454, height is about the same.

Re: 77 c10 454 build up
You could run a reg forged just keep the Comp lower... inverted dish
Blower pistons are for BIG HP |

Re: 77 c10 454 build up
I had hoped that the sb and bb sat close to the same. I have a hood with a 2" cowl and I'd kinda like to use it.
So if I really wanted to there's no reason why I couldn't use a set of speed pro D-cup pistons then right? They're Forged so I figure better than stock.. Bump my CR down to 8:1, still would do about 4ish psi. I'm trying to build a reliable 90 octane supercharged motor. This cam kinda looks close to the XR282. Long intake duration, longer exhaust and it has about the same lift too. It has a bigger LSA though, I like that. http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=2166&gid=291 What I'm looking for here is tq everywhere and I don't wanna rev it over 5500 rpm. I just want a small amount of boost to run 90 octane. I'm not into water/meth injection or fuel additives. The guys on hotrodders kept pushing me to build a high boost high rpm motor with different heads (049s for less CR). Not into it.. Greg Greg |
