Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Okay guys I installed my custom fuel cell from Performance online that I payed way to much for () and had sprayed with bedliner. See if you all can understand what I'm getting at here.... I suck at explaining so this may be a waste of everyones time
Here is my tank with the fuel neck pointing towards the rear of the truck. It comes with mounts welded to it that match to the frame pretty well. (Bolts will be replaced when tank is permanently installed) Here is the hole behind the tail light that I will fill the gas from. This fuel filler cap will bolt down inside this whole. This is the bottom side of the truck where the fuel fill line will enter from the tail light above. The red arrow represents where the hose will enter. The blue line represents the 5" space that my 90 will have to be able to turn in order for the fuel to flow properly. This shows the path the fuel line will travel until it gets to my fuel cell... The green line now represents the fuel flow path into the fuel cell. Here is an outer view to give another point of view. Well guys what do you think? Will it work? Should i go with 2 mandrel bent stainles 1.5" 90s to make my bends or should I just go with one single 4ft/1.5" fuel filler hose and bend it accordingly? Thanks for your input! |

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Use the mandrel bends but remember to leave at least a 3-5* downward angle from the taillight bend to the tank to keep the fuel from pooling up in the hose and making it difficult to fill up.

I agree with BLE 'BURBAN, Need more angle than shown, I'm interested in seeing what you do with the tail light....

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Maybe instead of running the fuel filler hose straight over I can angle it from the filler neck to the fuel cell. Shouldn't be that hard I dont think.
Just wondering if I'm on the right path with what I'm doing... |

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Angling it souldn't be a problem..you may have to open that hole under tha tall light & trim tha lip down in front of tha filler going in tha tank..

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Awesome, thanks for the pictures. I'll be doing the same thing soon except my filler neck comes out of the top of the tank (Burb tank) so I think I'll have some space issues under the bed.

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
To be honest I should have used a suburban tank. I payed way too much for my aluminum fuel cell. Especially since it was modified. Oh well. I hope my idea works.

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Yeah, you do need more of an angle...possibly make the angle higher up when it goes through that bottom hole and then just have a slow angle down the whole way....I really like the idea's people come up with for stuff like this.....creative thinking is cool

Well, between the hitch, and a bumper I think he is fine.
Thought I'd post this. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...96#post4450196 Anything past level will work, you'll just have to fill it slowly, and make sure you have a proper vent setup.

Not installed yet...
They'll know it before I do! Quote:
About the vent setup... I payed like 60 BUCK$ just so I could get a fill cap with the vent. I would absolutley not recommend doing this setup without a vented fill cap. Thanks for the replies and feedback guys. Keep them coming! I'm suprised no one has mentioned that there may be a possibillity of a fuel being spilled or splashed behind the tail light. Then the possibility of a short in the tail light....... Might make for an impressive boom though! Last edited by Hazieview; 04-02-2011 at 11:34 AM. |

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
wouldn't there be an issue with a gas filler being located so close to an electrical source? good idea i agree but could also give new meaning to the term HOTROD.

My thoughts..... I'd be more worried about the teenage chick on her cell phone rear endining me than an electrical short. Good thing about building your own truck is you can build it as safe as you want. |

I like your gas filler choice but I am not sure it will work. If your plan is to mount the flange to the hole in the light pocket, once you weld or hose clamp the mandrel bent tube to the bottom of it I think you will find your horizontal run is lower then the tank neck. Again I will snap a phot so you can get an idea how tight my bend is and how close the horizontal run is to the floor. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Installation complete! Just needs a little tweaking. I did end up not booting the filler to the hose. I'll post pictures later do yall can see why.
The way I cut rverythin made the bends flow naturally and I did it with that fuel filler hose I posted earlier. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Behind Taillight Gas filler drawings... Will it work?
Does the tank have a seperate vent line?
Have you filled the tank at a gas station yet? Does it require that you fill it slowly to keep it from puking back out? Last edited by lakeroadster; 04-10-2011 at 10:06 AM. |

What I ment to say was I did not end up bolting the filler to the hole where the wires came through at the bottom. The way I cut everything out made the bends flow a little more natural with the four foot fuel filler hose I bought from summit. Quote:
I have not had time to fill the truck up yet. I just got it installed yesterday. Plus I dont even have my fuel lines hooked up or my radiator ordered I'll post pictures soon but it will be a while before I test it. I'm going to try to do a video when filling to prove if this was a complete waste of money or not. Bare with me guys! thanks for all the feedback! Last edited by Hazieview; 04-10-2011 at 12:14 PM. |
