tailgate trunnion?

stopped in at paint prison today just in time to make a decision on tailgate problem. I wanted the older style centered logo ( GMC ) instead of the newer driver's side offset version. Problem is that there seems to be a difference in the trunnion. With all of the adjustment out there is still about 1/4" drop in the driver's side. The trunnion cups look good. The passenger side sets at the perfect height. Can anyone shed some light on this for me.

Re: tailgate trunnion?

I believe there is a slightly different trunion for 73-80 tailgates versus 81-87. I had that same problem and found the correct style at the boneyard and it solved my problem. Someone else on here will jump in and correct it if that's not right.

73/74 had a style, 75/80 had another style and 81/87 had yet another.

73/76 had a different style latch compared to the 77/87, if it will help you any.

Re: tailgate trunnion?

The tailgate that was on the truck had cups on the gate that were removable. The older gate I am using is a fixed style. I thought about the possiblity that the box mounted trunnion might be of a different size. Off to the bone yard. I have worked out a plan to machine a piece of HMWP that is offset and make a bushing if nothing else comes together. thanks for the tips.

Re: tailgate trunnion?

box mounted trunnion on a 1990 measures 1 1/4". pockets on a 70 something are over 1 1/2". rummaged the bone yard and came out with a matched set for my tailgate. get them cleaned up and to the body shop. Truck is going for glass on Monday. Hope to have it back this week.
