Radiator installation questions

My '63 230 has a bigger radiator from another vehicle in it, and it's starting to leak. It's mounted up and above the stock radiator position, and was held in by 2 bolts the previous owner drilled holes for.

I have no idea what it came out of, so I' thinking of just buying the correct '63 230 radiator for it, I still have the rubber mounting pads in the original location.

However I don't have what ever other parts I need to hold the radiator in place. And since I don't have them I have no idea what I need to get the stock radiator back in.

Is it just the fan shroud that holds the radiator in place? I was on classicparts.com and didn't see any other parts that looked like it would do the job.

As always, thanks for your help!

Re: Radiator installation questions

Nope, you need the upper rad mount/holder thing. also if you have the shroud, then you probably have the side curtains too. so looks like you only need the upper bracket.

I am going to look and see if I have one I am not going to use.

Re: Radiator installation questions

Actually the truck has no fan shroud, as I assumed it was removed and lost some point in the past.

It has an aftermarket fan attached to the wather pump which is larger than stock, which I'll have to replace too, because there won't be room for the stock radiator.

So with that said, it seems all i need is the upper radiator mount/support? I'll start looking around for that. If you have an extra one for sale, let me know as I'd be interested in it.

Re: Radiator installation questions

I'm putting the wider rad in my 65 and have the upper mount plus the side shields for the narrower rad. I need the side shields for a wider rad. Maybe we can do a swap.

Re: Radiator installation questions

well i've always said bigger is always better if you can put the 1964--66 chevy V8 radiator in they sell New the mounts to hold the radiator in place and they sell the side shields as well with the V8 shroud and if the truck dose not get wram in the cold months get your self a peace or lexsand plastic and put it in front og the radiator in the cold months so the truck will run at normal temps

this is my 1965 chevy with fan and shroud

Re: Radiator installation questions

Unless you'r restoring, it might be cheaper to go with the aluminum rad and electric fan.

Chef Rocka had a aluminum rad how to, using a low cost rad.

I have a v8 but the electric fan was one of the better mods I have done. About 1.5 mpg gain highway, quicker warm up and less noise.

Re: Radiator installation questions

I agree with astrochimp. I put a V8 aluminum radiator in front of my 230 with an electric fan and got rid of the OG slim rad because I do alot of highway driving in it. The OG rad was letting my engine get too hot. You take alot of drag and work off the engine by doin that, get better MPG and more HP. Its a win win! I still have the OG shroud, rad and support. Kinda wanna keep it incase I do a factory restoration someday but I highly doubt it and that stuff is collecting dust in my garage.
