Door Skins

My left door on the 66 needs a skin. I searched old threads hoping to learn how well or not so well the repo skins fit. I saw the issues 198Plus had. Has anyone installed or had a skin installed successfully? What is the general consensus on the repo skins?

I did the lower 10" of both my doors. It is very time consuming work but I had all the tools.

Do you have any pics of what your working with? rr41mag is correct. It is very time consuming.

I can post a pic later. My door has damage from the door stop failing and putting a nice crease down the door. I've put skins on chevelle doors in the past, just wondered how the truck skins fit. I thought it best to "fit" the skin before taking the door off. This way I would know the panel is lined up correctly. It could then be taken off and finish welded. It would be easier to find a good replacement door, just wanted options.

I have the same damage you mentioned from the same cause ! I'm interested in any info about this repair . I have seen lower door skins but never the upper or complete skin ?

There is an article in the March 2011 issue of "Classic Trucks". It is a step by step starting on page 38 through 42. The article made so that I even want to try it.

I don't blame you! I'm about to help my brother(bodyman) do mine, and after looking at them its not an easy door to skin using repop skins -the ones I have from LMC aren't complete outer skins- they stop below the window and you're going to have to decide where to cut/match. If it was a GM NOS full skin it might not as much work.

The $120 for the skin, plus shipping, plus hours of work makes my head hurt finding a good used door, or even a $450 new shell looks like a good deal.

Unfortunately, since I have the 60 knee-knocker style doors I can't buy a repop door. 1960-1963 are the bastard children as far as Chev trucks go. I love the character of the truck but it's hard to find the right parts.

My buddy Abe did the door skins on our '65... inner and outer. According to him they were a real pain to do, but we are very pleased with the results.
