K20 SPID lacks front locking hubs...why?
The 72 truck is an original K20 so why no front locking hubs listed on the SPID? Error at the plant? Did an alternative exist? I'd appreciate any input. It's got locking hubs now.
Thanks, Pete

Re: K20 SPID lacks front locking hubs...why?
They were optional and your truck didn't have that option. That would explain why it has the vintage Selectro hubs that were installed.

Re: K20 SPID lacks front locking hubs...why?
Please forgive my cluelessness but unless it had full time 4wd or auto engaging hubs I don't understand how the front axle would operate when in 4wd.

Re: K20 SPID lacks front locking hubs...why?
Older 4x4s had bolt on drive flanges. The flange slides over the splines on the axle shaft and bolts to the hub, making the front axle engaged at all times. I guess some would find it convenient to just have to throw the lever on the tcase and be in 4wd without getting out and locking the hubs, but it causes a lot of wear and tear on the front diff. With the old drive flanges, you can't UNlock the hubs and disengage themfrom the axle, so when you're rolling, even in 2wd,the front axles and diff are turning.

Re: K20 SPID lacks front locking hubs...why?
The original design of a 4wd has the axles engaged all the time, just like the rear. "Locking hubs" is a misnomer. They are actually lock-outs. They are an aftermarket improvement that became a standard, but was still an option in the 67-72s,although most got them. Look at an original WWII Jeep or Willys and you will see there is just a bolt on cap over the hub.

Re: K20 SPID lacks front locking hubs...why?
Now I get it. Thanks for the feedback. The gas mileage must have been lousy with the 4.56 gears out back and an always engaged front axle.
Feller: Don't have a clue where to get these hubs but maybe when the Selectros are removed this fall I can swap you for a nice set of Spicers?

Re: K20 SPID lacks front locking hubs...why?
I've got those hubs on mine too, Selectros. They're pretty good.
If you do swap them for something else don't throw them away. Mail 'em to me Last edited by GMC4wheels71; 04-13-2011 at 10:41 PM. |
