700R4 crossmember, need suggestions
Hey guys, I'm currently setting the engine/tranny into the compartment. I have a short bed, and want to keep the stock e-brake crossmember.
I have searchered the forum and can not come up with anything for my certain scenario. Is there any way that on a short bed, i can run the 700R4 with the stock e-brake crossmember? I don't mind modifying it as long as it stays in the same location. Does anybody have suggestions, or seen some one else do something similar to this? Thanks in advance!

You may be able to retain the e-brake crossmember, by lowering it below the trans crossmember. Maybe flip it upside down? If it were me, I would just convert your truck over to the '66-'72 e-brake cable assembly.

Re: 700R4 crossmember, need suggestions
What I did was crude but effective. Took out the e brake crossmember and cut out the part that holds the lever that holds the cables. Then I drilled holes and used the holes already in the 68 automatic crossmember with spacers to bolt the e brake crossmember to it. I hope I still have it all so I can put it back.

Ok, i dont want to move the motor mounts forward so this is what i have,
This one is showing that the tranny still needs to come back and tilt down and clear the fire wall

no I don't have any pictures. I took it apart and have not put it back together yet. You might have to redrill the frame for the crossmember. For some reason My 65 had two sets of holes and the other set worked for me. My 66 didn't have two sets and I will have to drill the frame to accept the crossmember for the 700.

I thought of the same thread. Thanks for finding it. I'm guessing the suburban crossmember is from a 2WD. I don't see any parking brake accommodations though.

Re: 700R4 crossmember, need suggestions
I don't happen to have any pics at the moment. I could take some of a '70 frame that I have, but it looks like Woogeroo has pics in the link he posted. The '66-'72's didn't have that crossmember for the e-brake. They just use a series of cables and hooks/rods. Thgis would be the simplest IMO.

Re: 700R4 crossmember, need suggestions
You`re at a crossroad here, either you`ll have to move engine mounts forward and install new trans member, or you`ll have to trim lip in firewal to clear trans and still install trans member....

Re: 700R4 crossmember, need suggestions
I have a 66 swb fleetside gmc here is a link to pictures o the e brake set up, it is pretty simple, I have a 65 chevy also and the old system is much bulkier and harder to route exhaust around. Kieth www.kieth.smugmug.com go to the 66 gmc gallery.
here is a link to the e brake photo: http://kieth.smugmug.com/Trucks/66-G...39504536_X5Lck Last edited by kieth; 04-25-2011 at 09:48 AM. |

Re: 700R4 crossmember, need suggestions
You can acually just bend the the lip back and the tranny will slide back more. No trimming needed just a BFH.. Just the top part of the lip.

Re: 700R4 crossmember, need suggestions
Here are the cables listed at Classic parts.
http://www.classicparts.com/Hardware/products/198/2/0 I don't see the hooks or rods listed at either Classic or LMC. You might check in the '60-'66 classifieds, or in the '67-'72 classifieds here on the forum. There will likely be someone that has the parts you are looking for.
