cadillac 500

buddy of mine has a caddilac 500 long block he is wanting to get rid of. 350 bucks. ive toyed with the idea of a 496 big block goin into the ol truck but thats some big money. yall know if the cadillac uses the same motor mounts as a bbc? i would assume so but ive definately been wrong before. plus yall are the gurus.

Re: cadillac 500

i was readin about the alittle bit. aparently they came out in 1970 with a 10:1 compression ration. 400 hp and 550 tq. i wanna say they had aluminum heads as well. but only in 1970. 1971 they dropped the cr to 8.5:1. and got rid of the aluminum heads. hp = 235. by 1976 190 hp. with my luck itll end up bein the 76 model.
as far as the engine swap would go, do they use the same bell houseing as the sbc and bbc. i dont know a dang thing about caddy motors.

500 caddys never had aluminum heads from the factory. They have a B.O.P bell housing bolt pattern, Shouldnt be hard to find a BOP TH400.

Re: cadillac 500

I was originally going to put a Cadillac 500 into my 74 3/4 ton until I found out it had a bad thrust bearing but thats a whole nother story. Imo the Cadillac 500 is a torque monster and a great engine for a truck with highway gearing. But if you want to "Hot Rod" this engine then I would go with a bbc. A friend of mine built a 500 for his drag car. He went with 10:1 comp. and Jesel rockers with a custom comp cam. He used olds forged con rods(stock Caddy are cast) with ross pistons and in the end the engine performed great but he couldn't keep head gaskets in it. After all that money he ended up building a 496 bbc that has held up great. So imo as a stock engine they are great but they can get expensive very fast. As for the motor mounts they are different but if you get engine mounts off a late 70's 425 they will let you bolt a 500 to 73+ chevy frame mounts.

Re: cadillac 500

They do not use chevy mounts. You need a BOP bellhousing. Performance parts are very expensive. If you plan to keep it stock and have moderate fabrication skills go for it. If your looking to upgrade or hop up the engine your better off in the end going with a bbc. They are torque monsters but have there limitations and they are expensive.

Re: cadillac 500

my 64 gmc has one in it, or a 472...
either way the had to cut a little of the firewall for clearance, and a notch in the crossmember to clear the pan. auto transmission.
