How much nitrous can the stock crate 350 take?

How much nitrous can the stock goodwrench 350 crate take on a regular basis?

We will define "regular basis" as at least 3 to 20 1/4 mile passes per weekend.

This engine:

The goal is to get within 10%, meet, or slightly exceed the zz383's numbers at a much cheaper cost.

NOTE: the zz383 produces 425hp @ 5400 and 449tq @ 4500

Re: How much nitrous can the stock crate 350 take?

Dang beat me to it LOL. Well I think it was car craft or hot rod did a test a while back about just that and they made it too I think 250 before it went boom but that was also a junkyard motor, and one pull each time with SKILLED guys tuning. Cast pistons just arent meant to handle anything other than normal combustion process. Some guys that have played with it long enough ie: burnt up enough pistons, could probably make it live for a while on a 100 but thats pushing it.

Re: How much nitrous can the stock crate 350 take?

Not really a Chevy guy but I have done something similar to a stock AMC 360 in a Jeep. It ran mid 14s and I sprayed it into the high 12s. I know we can't compare engines but we can compare costs. To get where you're talking about it'll take about a 150 shot. Figuring the old rule 1 lb lasts 10 seconds @ 100 hp shot you're going to use just less than 2 lbs per pass. 2 lbs times $5 per pound is $10 per pass times 20 passes is a potential for an extra $200 in a weekend. That adds up quick, plus you're going to be spending money on top of that for the nitrous kit and 5 or 6 bottles you'll need. By the time it's all said and done you might find you'd be better off building something with a little higher compression, better heads, etc. Not saying nitrous is bad (I still use it) but there's a cost involved and you've got to weigh it vs the cost of better engine components.

purdy much any V8 will take a 100 shot all day. most will even take a 125-150. just make sure you have a good enuff fuel supply. pull 2* for every 50hp and i usually run 1-2 heat ranges cooler plug gapped to .032

Now there's a guy who knows how nitrous works on a stock-ish motor. Small world.

I think there's alot more to think about like altitude, fuel usage and octane and alot of things go into saying yes or no. In my opinion will it last probably, for how long???? Who knows. If your willing to throw down the coin I would get something with forged rods and pistons at best.

Re: How much nitrous can the stock crate 350 take?

Its a huge maybe on saying how long something will last on the juice. Cast pistons are prone to melting if the mixture goes lean. If you plan on an engine to live a long time on nitrous at any hp level you need to build an engine for nitrous. AS was said nitrous can get expensive over time. It adds up big. The biggest thing to be aware of is your fuel system being up to task. Your timing needs to be right as well. I would stay at 100hp or under to be safe. Back the timing off a bit and run a colder plug.

Re: How much nitrous can the stock crate 350 take?

If it goes lean or gets into detonation it'll kill any type of piston. With forged you may get away with it a couple times but they will die quickly. A 100 shot is really nothing special. As long as the tune is reasonable it'll probably be ok.

Re: How much nitrous can the stock crate 350 take?

ring end gap will kill it.
150 is about all you can get out of it and it live a long time..
thats if you have the timing/plugs/ and fuel system to do it//

I've hit a crate engine (basic g.m. crate, nothing fancy) with a dual shot..
150 on the first and 200 on the 2nd but that was progressively controlled, the 2nd hit came on smooth.. that car payed it's way nicely..

Re: How much nitrous can the stock crate 350 take?

i've been spraying my stock LT1 roadmaster wagon for years. changed plugs this year and they look as good as any new engine. you think all those mustangs have built engines? people have sprayed them, camaros, montes, and pickups for years with no internal upgrades. and yes, you will need to run premium fuel. i would expect anyone would know that. back in the day my buddy and i would spray 125 shots to our 305 IROCs and not even pull timing. maybe it was dumb luck but most stock/crate engines are so mild to begin with. the jug just wakes them up is all.

i think most any engine can take a 125HP shot, but the question is for how long.......

Some people have no problem blowing up their bottom end, then simply taking their "salad"----heads, intake etc. and transfering it another junkyard block, run it till it blows, wash rinse and repeat etc. etc. i don't want to be doing this.

Re: How much nitrous can the stock crate 350 take?

well, then run a 25 shot. don't know what else to tell you. been using the stuff for over 20yrs. took over 700lbs of it to take out a piston on the bike. never have hurt a v8 with a 150 shot or less. i'll tell you that you can't hardly feel a 75 shot and it's a waste of time and money

Re: How much nitrous can the stock crate 350 take?

Comparing mustangs, camaros and truck motors nowadays is different than a gen1 sbc. Forged internals and a computer help plus anything with fuel injection will take some boost due to better fuel atomization. Keep it under 100 and pull some timing.
