Hood hinges
Ok folks, I need some help... I have been looking & looking and simply cannot locate anyone that offers any kind of aftermarket hood hinges for the 73-87's similar to the ones they make for the 67-72 versions. I don't really care if they're made of billet or not, but would prefer ones that have the little gas struts attached for a cleaner installation. They can require fabrication or body mods to install as I have a very good body guy to do it. If you know of anything or have this kind of mod please let me know!

Re: Hood hinges
gas struts can be added to tha ones you got..i've seen it done on a few diff. cars...all you should need is a couple of ball studs..tha right length/pound strut & a lil thinking.
This site seems to have all tha stuff need to put something to gether

Re: Hood hinges
I would contact Ed Borges at out Eddie Motorsports and see if they will make you a set. They seem to be the most in tune with making them for trucks.

Re: Hood hinges
Well, I did contact Eddie's Motorsports, but again no luck... I even asked if it would be possible for them to fabricate a "one-off" set just for me, but their response was that they were basically "too busy".... Guessing that if I had a famous name or was doing a SEMA rig or something they'd probably squeeze me right in though! No immediate press = no product support - funny to me how some companies often forget the little people that want stuff just as badly!

Re: Hood hinges
I agree I have asked a lot of companies the same thing, and the answer I get is “it’s a waste of time and money “ , “there is no demand for hinges for these trucks” and my answer is BULL S#%&!!

Re: Hood hinges
These trucks are & always have been SUPER popular and just can't begin to imagine why no one has made a set.... Like I said, if I had a famous name or was building a full show vehicle for SEMA or something I bet one of these companies would build a set for me!!!

Re: Hood hinges
Sorry, but I have to disagree. Those hinges average 500.00 a set. How many guys you know going to drop 5 bills for billet hinges?

Re: Hood hinges
Well they seem to do it all the time for the 67-72's & I for one would spend it to have the function & appearance for the billet with the gas strut over the crappy factory set-up!!! Why spend so much on these vehicles & then just skimp out on the hinges??? One more thing to make it unique!

Re: Hood hinges
I understand "you" are willing to spend the bucks, but not that many others will. At least not compared to the quantity of high end builds for 67-72's. Combine that with the fact that you have to relocate the hinges if you do a serious drop on a 67-72 and you have a bigger market.
Have you tried Fesler Built? They have them too...$$$$

Re: Hood hinges
Yeah, I fully realize that they 67-72 is a WAY larger market - especially for the high end builds, but still... The pic you have there is basically EXACTLY what I want mine to look like (in black)!

Re: Hood hinges
I wonder how far off they are. Maybe you could make them fit. With a bit of welding, anything can be made to fit.
This was the setup on the 82 Blazer I was building. We were going to fab a set of hinges from flat stock.

Re: Hood hinges
Yeah, they can't be that far off... Mario at Novelli's Rod & Custom is also doing a little research on this for me from his end & he'd be able to modify a set if they're close enough to work for what we need. Wish I could find a company interested in making a set as a template for later production, but so far the big bubb-kiss!
If we do come up with something that will work - with or without mods - I'll be sure & get pics put on here of it for everyone else's reference. |

Re: Hood hinges
Not a bad idea. I am sure that Mario & I are gonna be going back & forth with a lot of ideas since it's not looking good for finding anything that'll be a "bolt-on" deal.... With his years of experience in custom car building I am sure that we can make it something nicer than the stocker!

Re: Hood hinges
Here is my version using the stock hinge and replacing the coil spring with a gas strut ans ball rod, dont know if this will work on a 73-80 hood.

Re: Hood hinges
That's a cool option. I was just thinking of ordering some for my TBSS from redline tuning.

Re: Hood hinges
I dont remember the length, but they are off of a mid 90s Jeep Grand Cherokee off of the back lift gate. they were the only ones strong enough to hold up my hood at the low angle I have it set at. the closer to the front of the truck you mount the ball stud on the fenders the lower it keeps the hood when opened. I wanted mine to be the same height as the roof when opened, but if I need to work under the hood I just disconnect them and the ball stud and hold the hood fully open with a hood prop.

Re: Hood hinges
26 inches pin to pin
but be aware these can seize up closed had barely the space to get the torx in the crack to undo them then lift the gate these had to be replaced last fall on a 02 van

Re: Hood hinges
Thats essentially the same thing I did, just a different angle. The problem is it won't work like that on the 73-80 because the hinge assembly is totally different.
