Re: Welding Help
The steel has a galvanized coating. It's to keep the pipe/steel from rusting. You will never get a good weld with it still on the pipe. It's like welding painted steel. Remove the galvanized coating and you should be good to go.

Re: Welding Help
Strange part is that i'm using uncoat new steel which i cut plugs out of to fill all the various holes. This material welds normal, when i place this plug in the hole which is held by a magnet it acts like the body steel, mig wire just pops like it does on the body steelI'm using .035 wire and tried .030 wire which acted the same.I did grind areas with a disc but i guess i didn't remove all the galvaneal.
Thanks for the help and Thank You for your service to our Country. Last edited by candyx; 05-15-2011 at 02:23 PM. Reason: forgot sentence |

Re: Welding Help
Maybe you should practice on some scrap til you get the process down.
It sort of sounds like your ground connection isn't good, or no gas. Are you using solid wire and gas? .023 I think is the standard size wire people normally use for sheet metal. Last edited by 72lb4x4; 05-15-2011 at 02:56 PM. |

Re: Welding Help
dwcsr wins the WTF is happening.Magnet is the problem,i did the first one and tacked the plug in and then removed the magnet and completed the weld. The other two i left the magnet on but didn't pay no mind to it.I could weld any where else in the cab except where the magnet was behind the plug.

Re: Welding Help
The wire is too large. .024 is what to use. I've used magnets many times, but to hold and tack. What is the gas flow set to?
