New guy here with a '86 SWB
Hi all. I have Searched for a 81-87 chevy pickup for the last 8 months..
I was picky. It had to be/have, SWB, fleetside, A/C, power windows/locks, V8 I found this beauty about 75 miles from home. It's a '86 Sierra classic, 305, 700R4. She runs, but the quadrajet is flooding something terrible right now. I paid $950. I think I got a good deal.. The body is amazingly straight, no rust at all. Comes with a New tailgate and it has a grille, but it's one of those square tube chrome ones, which i dont like.. I'll be putting a stock silverado grille on it, along with all the slverado badging. I just have always wanted a chevy this body style since my dad had an '83 silverado LWB when I was a kid. Oh, forgot to mention, It's got true dual exhaust, no cats with flowmaster 40's on it already! and the A/T tires look fairly new! I go pick it up friday... I cannot wait! Not to mention I can get rid of the '94 Cherokee I've been driving (and treating) like a truck.

First square I've seen that someone put a steering wheel on it with an airbag.
So where you gonna start? I know a bath will be the first thing, but you gonna tackle the interior and carb first? Or dive right in with a body off refresh?

Re: New guy here with a '86 SWB
Yeah,, the steering wheel is pretty goofy.. Same wheel my '97 Silverado had.. Funny story about that, My buddy and I stopped at the local Pull-A-Part on the way home from looking at the truck, I was looking for a few parts for it. Found a good vent window glass, and I was looking for a few little things for my Jeep so I can "Detail for Retail". Just so happened there was a cherokee I was getting a couple of things from, opened the door, and there was a brand new leather wrapped Grant steering wheel sitting there! Just like the one pictured. Best thing is, The older Cherokee's used a GM steering column, so the wheel will bolt right on!
My plans right now, are a SERIOUS bath, rebuild the carb, fresh tune up, fluids, etc... Disable the ESC crap (there has been a billy bob mechanic mucking around in there before.. what a shock..) Change a few little broken bits (window switch, vent window), try to ge the A/C up and running (belt is off, but compressor seems fine ) Then drive it as I slowly fix other things. Down the road a bit, She'll be getting a R-code Vortec 350, Edelbrock carb/intake, headers. I plan on keeping this truck for a LONG time!

Yeah, get rid of the ESC stuff and all the emissions you can, toss a vacuum advance distributor in there and it'll make it run a lot better.
Has the A/C been changed over to R134 yet, or can you tell? Would be a good time to swap it over if not.

Re: New guy here with a '86 SWB
I think the suspension is staying as-is for now, maybe when it isn't a DD anymore, I'll do a 4/6. Btw, how many of us Louisiana guys are on here?

Re: New guy here with a '86 SWB
It looks like you made it home safely. That is a super solid truck for the price, Its crusty in places, but nothing that can't be fixed. Keep us posted on your progress.
