Looking for a 9 inch donor vehicle
Hey guys I'm wanting to get a 9 inch for my 47 chevy. I'm going to be doing a 4 link system out back with disc brakes. Do you guys know of a vehicle to look for with the correct width rearend to look for in the junk yard? I want a 9 inch because I'm looking to make roughly 800rwhp when I'm finished. I'm going to go through it completely and replace bearings, gears to suit my needs, and put a posi unit in. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Looking for a 9 inch donor vehicle
I believe most junkyard 9" of a width you'd be interested in are going to be 28 spline with small bearing outers.
Speedway sells 9" housings with new tubes and ends for $250, for that price I wouldn't even mess with a junkyard housing. Then you could add 35 spline axles of your choice.

Awesome. I like that idea a lot better. It comes in a 56" width. Is that the correct width for our trucks?

Okay. I measured my frame where the rearend would be (The frame is bare now) and it's 43.5 inches which will leave 6.5 inches on each side when it's mounted. Is that enough room for wheels? Talk about some deep dish rims!

Re: Looking for a 9 inch donor vehicle
Everything will depend on what you want for wheels and tires on the rear. For example, my rear is 60" wide with 1" spacers (so 62" total) and is perfect for 15x7 wheels with 3.75" backspacing and 235/75 R 15 tires. The tires are pretty much centered between the fender and bedside. If you want to run wider tires, you'll either need wider fenders with a wider axle or wheel tubs in the bed with a narrower axle. I'd call Speedway and see what your options are, I don't know if that 56" is finished wheel mount to wheel mount width, or if it's housing end to housing end not accounting for the approx 2.375" the axles stick out from the housing ends on each side.
Once you know your variables (or at least what you want), then you can figure out how wide you want your axle to be.

Re: Looking for a 9 inch donor vehicle
I got my axle out of a buddys dirt car that had only a couple of runs before they changed the rules in his class to allow a full open rear end. It is a currie axle that is 60 wms to wms. I have read that 60 to 62 inch wms to wms is optimal. I found a posi third member under a bronco but with the horse power you are after a aftermarket third member would probably be the better choice. Speedway sells a lot of dirt car stuff with different third member offsets and bearing types, and 56" might be a flange to flange measurement. Call them or Currie enterprises to get the best advice, another friend of mine ordered the wrong housing off the website. oops.

Re: Looking for a 9 inch donor vehicle
To hook up any where close to 800 ponys you will need some BIG meats under the rear. You will need a narrowed rearend and 12-14" rims. JMO
