can you put an 85 front grille on a 77 chevy ?

I would say no, if you're just looking to change the grille alone. The grille opening is shaped different, rounded on the 77, rectangular on the 85. What you can do is change the whole nose, if you have it. Radiator support, grille, hood and fenders will interchange pretty easy, and no one would ever know it's not an 85. But an older looking round headlight truck is probably a little cooler, imo.

you cant inter change 73-80 grills with 81-87s. youd have to change whole front clips. you can change 70s and 80s bumpers, but personally i think it doesnt look good.

If rust issues are the motovation for the clip change. Parts can be had pretty cheap on this side of the mountain. there were a couple of trucks and burbs being parted out on KPR craigslist in the last couple weeks.
