Thinking about adding this to the collection
I left out this morning on the hunt for a K5. I had 3 that I planned to look at within 300 miles of the house. All the K5's turned out to be turds, not nearly the vehicles they were described to be. On the way home I spotted this beauty on the side of the road. I don't need another suburban and I don't need anything 2wd, but this thing is just so nice I feel like I need to give it a new home. I've never seen one exactly like this. It's a 2wd 350/auto 1988 Silverado model called a "Outrider"?? I think I can get it for $1500 and it runs and everything works "supposedly" including the A/C. What do y'all think? Is this some type of custom conversion? Is it worth the money? Im thinking about going back to get it tomorrow.

Re: Thinking about adding this to the collection
That's a nice looking rig. Great price for sure. If you can use it, buy it. If you don't need it..... why buy it? My 89 isn't that nice or a conversion, but serves a purpose. This would be an aftermarket conversion= seats, console and interior lights. Just emblem for the outside, instead of full body package and wheels. Looks like it was well kept. Good buy for someone.

Re: Thinking about adding this to the collection
Well, I'm back home. Went to go look it over again and make a deal on it. I got there, verified that everything did work on it......windows, locks, back glass, A/C, power seats, etc....it all checked out good. Hopped in it to take a test drive and before I could even get out on the road the transmission was about to fall out of it. It was a 700R4, it was slipping and popping in and out of gear with the slightest amount of acceleration. Seems like 1st was ok, 2nd was all but gone, and 3rd would hold for 2-3 seconds and then slip out. I'm no transmission expert so I have no idea what exactly the problem is. He said that it had never acted that way before. He drove it as well and seen what it was doing. I offered to buy it "as-is" at a reduced price, but he said he was curious to find out what the problem was and would have it checked out and call me in the next day or two. It sucks a*% because it was a 2hr drive (one way) for me and about $75 worth of diesel. Oh well.....it's not the first dry run I've made and it sure as hell prolly won't be my last.

Re: Thinking about adding this to the collection
The 700R4 is not the cheapest transmission to get rebuilt. I wouldn't get into that Suburban knowing it has trans problems. They are easy enough to come by fully functional that the money & time involved just isn't worth it to me. Plus like you said, you really weren't looking for another one. This just gives you an excuse to pass it up even with it being in nice physical condition.
I say keep looking for the K5 you really wanted in the first place.

Looks like it`d be a great body for a 4wd swap.

Re: Thinking about adding this to the collection
I'd buy it with a busted trans...700r4's are common as dirt today.
A quick craigslist search for rebuilt trannies shows 700's for 2wd for $500 and 4x4 ones for $650 in my area..."used" trannies are even less. The extra parts like a torque converter...maybe a few extra bucks to have the shop put a shift kit in it...I think you could buy a rebuilt one, and put it in yourself for well under a grand. Try to get it for 600 bucks. |

Re: Thinking about adding this to the collection
I hear you on the K5 search. I couldn't find anything around here, wound up going 4 hours into Arkansas for the one I've got now. They're out there.

Too bad we are so far apart. I could find you a reasonably priced decent condition K5 pretty quickly here. The cost of gas would be offset pretty quick vs just paying more locally for a nice one, that is if you can even find one. Maybe having a board member check one out for you and having it shipped might be a viable option if you can't find a decent K5 locally.
