Were there NO shortbed 4x4s in 1972?
I was trying to decode this VIN for a 1972:
TKE172S518468 Using the info right from GM's own website: http://service.gm.com/dealerworld/vi.../vincard72.pdf But if you look at the cab-chassis type for K, it's of course 4x4 but on that card is listed as '106" Converntional Cab 4x4' and there is no 92" or 96" even possible. That said, the K has an asterisk saying it "includes Blazer, Jimmy, and Suburban". But if there is a shortbox 4x4, how does it get reflected in the VIN on a 1972? Thanks! Dave

I agree, that sounds like a GMC vin..and even on a Chevy you cant denote wheel base from the vin number. It will be listed on the SPID label tho and can be read from the model number as well.

It is a GMC vin. That's what the first spot, the T stands for, GMC. A "C" would be chevy. This is 72 only.
Dave, Is the 7 in your vin correct? (5th spot)

Definitely a GMC. The 1972 Chevys start as CKE or CKS- I have two 72 swb 4x4 and one 71 swb 4x4. The "E" is the v8 truck and "S" is the six cylinder truck
