Windsheild seal quality?
I have a chip in my windsheild, and was thinking that when I take it in to have replaced I would just have the glass shop reinstall the glass with a brand new seal. The old one has a gap at the bottom of almost 2 inches that someone at some point stuffed (I assume) a wad of seran wrap into to seal, and it leaks a little. I have catalogs from Year One, Classic Industries, LMC, and a few other places, and was just wondering who makes the best quality seal? Anyone have any experiences that would lead them to pick one seal over another? Thanks for the input guys.

Re: Windsheild seal quality?
I had my insurance company install a windshield this week on my '65 and the gasket they used was marked "Precision" (on the package) and seems to be pretty good quality.
Oh yeah I'll be in your 'hood next week Fryer... |

Re: Windsheild seal quality?
I bought mine from Chevy Duty (now Classicparts) back in 1998 and installed it on a new windshield. That glass was smashed in 2002. The gasket was cleaned up and reused, and it still looks like new. My truck has always been garage kept so that may be part of the reason it remains in such good condition. If I ever need another one I’ll no doubt buy from the same supplier.
Here’s what it looked like in 2002: And here’s what the gasket looked like a year ago. It looks exactly the same today. There isn't any detectable deterioration: |

Re: Windsheild seal quality?
I literally just got home from having my windshield seal replaced. I got mine from classicparts and it was horrible. It had a twist in it that would not let it stay on the glass. After fighting with it for 2.5 hrs the installer still could not get the stainless trim back in without the seal twisting off the glass so he installed it without the trim. He said in 40+ years he's never had so much trouble with a seal.

Re: Windsheild seal quality?
thats cause they sell counterpart gaskets. They have never sold a quality gasket. Steel Rubber is a good gasket its not the only one however. It cost more than others and I have used them. Good products but the priced is higher for a gasket that really does not out perform Precision for the money.

Re: Windsheild seal quality?
So, does it make more sense to just have the window guys use their windshield and seals rather than buying the parts from these suppliers?

Re: Windsheild seal quality?
UPDATE:
I still have not recieved my seal from Steele. Turns out they sell Precision seals and are backordered for months and they have no idea how long it could take. One guy I talked to said it could be up to 12 mounths! I do not want to wait a friggin' year to get my windshield sealed properly. Do anyone else sell a high quality seal?

Re: Windsheild seal quality?
So are the "Steele" or "precision" seals available through LMC (is that the brand they sell)? Or where would be some good sources? I've found a few places that sell them, but they seem to be out of stock.

Re: Windsheild seal quality?
Maybe I'll order mine now since they're a year out on backorder.

I just replaced (well, I hired an installer) my windshield and rear window on my 66. I have two sets of seals for each window - counterparts and precision. Windshield: Counterparts seal worked fine and the installer said it looked like a good gasket. Used it instead of the Precision part. Rear (small) window: Counterparts gasket was a total POS and was about 3" too short to wrap around the window. Used the precision gasket and it was a huge PITA to install (for the two of us, and he is a seasoned installer). YMMV. |
