1965 c10 short wide rebuild
hey guys, new to this forum, going to post my build on my c10, first of all, it is all origina metal, almost zero dents/rust (just surface) the bed has a few more dent than anticipated, but I will deal with that later. As for now I want to put a motor and tranny in it, (probably 250 6cyl) because that is in my garage and it runs.. lol as of now I am working on the surface rust problem, it is pretty deep pitted, and I am led to believe that the rust kutter I have will kill the rust in the pits that I cant clean up with a wire wheel or hand brush, and the I will spray a good epoxy primer over that. please advise if I am doing this wrong.
thanks! |

here are some pics
the last of the pictures I have already gotten the majority of the surface rust off, just trying to burrow into the remainder and kill it...? |

Very cool. what about a LS install?
I prefer the patina actually.

Yup..the patina is your worn, and rusted, paint. I think your truck is the same color as mine. A little more patina on yours but not by much!

Re: 1965 c10 short wide rebuild
I would really like to put a rack and pinion in it, not sure how or if that would work, I just like the drivability that they have. and also a 4l60e so I will prolly consider a stock 5.3, 5.7, or a 6.0.
as for the patina, I dont like how splochy it was , if the whole truck looked like the bed I would have left it alone for a lil while lol thanks for the advise guys

Re: 1965 c10 short wide rebuild
Welcome to the forum
I always prefer media blasting to remove the rust, but I realize that is not affordable for everyone. But it is the best way to get rid of rust IMO. Have you tried the CLR and Scotchbrite method? Many guys do that to preserve the 'patina' look. There is a thread or two here somewhere on how to do it.

Re: 1965 c10 short wide rebuild
no factory a/c as far as I'm aware, the previous owner added a system but not sure where the inside guts are. and its in pretty bad shape.. I also will need a instrument cluster, I would like to find the one with the 4 needle gauges across the bottom, not sure how rare they are.

Re: 1965 c10 short wide rebuild
daaaaaaamn! i would have killed for that patina. no new car will ever have that. but oh well. i've heard apple cider vinager works well for removing rust. but think you have to submerge it. otherwise a rough d.a. or flap wheel on a grinder may work. but youll have to bondo to get it smooth.

Re: 1965 c10 short wide rebuild
I like how you did the body, personally. I think it actually preserved the patina and highlighted it even better. To me, (my opinion) rust hides the real patina underneath. I have always believed that the patina is in the paint, not the rust. But then again, I live in the desert of California, and you never see rust out here. Lots of sunburned paint, but hardly any rust. I'd rather see one with the original color peeking out than to see nothing but a coating of rust. Everyone has their own opinion, and I think that's what makes building cars and trucks so fun. If we all built vehicles that all looked alike, this would be one boring hobby.

as for the truck, I will fix the cosmetics for now, and worry about most of the body work later (just piddling with the rust every once in awhile)

Re: 1965 c10 short wide rebuild
Yes. media blasting with the correct media will remove all of the rust. IMO it is the best way to strip metal down to see exactly what you have to work with. No hidden rust to come back and bite you later on. Media blasting on sheetmetal should be done by someone with experience blasting sheetmetal. Someone that does not have the experience, can quicly ruin an otherwise straight body panel.
