time to camm-er up

im lookin into doin a cam and lifter kit on my 283.. I have my eyes set on the 2103 cam & lifter kit from edelbrock.. would just changing out the cam be ok, or would i need to get the;camshaft bearings?rods?valve springs? what would be the most efficient but inexpensive route to go?

For a stock 283, I would go with something like this cam

it is the exact same cam as the Edelbrock 2102. That is a good all around cam for a stock engine. That cam is pretty mellow in a 350, but it should sound and perform good in a 283. I would suggest also getting a timing chain and gear set, and also valve springs and rocker arms, if those are still original. This will allow you to obtain the full benifit from the cam upgrade. You will also want to read up on the importance of proper cam break in and the need to use an oil that has sufficient ZDDP content to support a flat tappet cam. The typical oils available these days do not. Here is some reading to get you started.

How about installing/changing out cam bearings, is it recommended?
Not with th whole valve lift stuff, is .442 much different than .420? I don't understand th whole lift at valve, exhaust, duration..
I want to hear my engine pitter-patter wen it's at idle..
What I was originally going to get cam wise was a .484, but I heard that's tooooo big for a 283..

To change the cam bearings the engine will have to come out .. also all the crap that settles behind the bearings would need to be washed out.. I mandate at minimum that the block is spray washed when i install cam bearings... To simply do a cam change does not warrent changing the bearings unless they are visually tore up.. I used to sell the stock 350 cam , if someone wanted an upgrade on a 283, and that was plenty of cam for that size engine...

i too am getting to that point with my little 283.hot tanked,mag tested,sonic tested,new pistons,cam bearings.i am thinking the eddy 2102,eddy 27034 intake,and 500 or 600 cfm carb.i think the 2102 cam will be a perfect setup.

My dad wanted something different and unique so he took the 385 stroker out of his rambler and now he has that bad 283 with 300plus HP in her!

I'd like to do all Edelbrock, but hearing that comp, I'm jus bout hooked.. I'll still have to figure all the other items I'll need to get; cam bearings, pushrods, rocker arms..I'm defiantly getting new springs, and timing chain/gear set..
But if I can just change out th cam & lifters with no problems.. That's Wat I'm hoping.. Will I be ok? Or should I not cheat it and do it all?

i think it would be best to change everything you listed minus the cam bearings,imsure they will be fine.the only reason i did mine is because my engine was out and hot tanking and shot peening destroys them.as captain fab stated by changing the valve springs etc. you will get the full benefit of the cam upgrade.i am also struggling with cam selection,idont fully understand the whole lift,duration thing.the comp cam does sound sick but i wonder if it might be a bit much for a street driver 283..i dont know.please keep us updated with your decision.cant stop learning.

So I just picked up the picker and stand..Wednesday will be th day I begin th draining of fluids...can't wait to get started with th tear down.. Th wife said no to engine being pulled in th garage, but Hmmmm.. I'll post pics..

Well I didn't choose 1yet because th PO "says" he rebuilt th motor..so I'm going to pull it all out, find part#'s if any and start from there..
But I'm still in a limbo on choosing comp or edelbrock..

Comp thumper cams are great, I wouldn't hesitate for a second if it's in your budget. I had a comp cam high energy in my first truck with a 283 and it was a great driveable engine, that 12-205-2 sounds like the one I had.
Keep in mind if you go big and you have an automatic you will want to upgrade your torque convertor to a stall while your engine is out, if it's a manual less problems...

so i pulled th block, got ahold of th cam inside, its a Elgin brand cam pn# E923P.. similar to th edelbrock rv cam.. all th info i read about the cam was

The gear drive is really going to suck breaking in the cam because you won't be able to hear anything but it. Get some good oil and a bottle of zddp

I had a Pete Jackson noisy gear drive in my 350/46 Ford back in 1984, and since 1991 I've had one in my 350/1960 GMC. Can't imagine doing without it. Combined with a manual 4 speed it makes music I could listen to all day, which also explains why I don't have a radio!

Im ready to hear th music too...lol..
I flipped a coin and I got tails.. So I bought th Edelbrock 2103 cam kit.. I took th heads to a machine shop, th springs have a seat pressure of 88lbs, th valve seals are in great condition..I still need to get all th gaskets new head bolts.. My Intake valve is 1.84 and exhaust is 1.50.. Same As th 305 heads..
Anything that I should watch for during th break-in?? I kno th 20 mins @2k rpm.. Is that it??I was planning on doing it with th tranny disconnected to lesson th load on th motor... What do I do after th break-in??

Be sure to liberally apply the cam assembly lube. Also add a bottle of engine break in additive to the oil. If you aren't aware of the lack of ZDDP in most current oils and the increased number of flat tappet cam failures as a result, you really should read up on that.
