My trans just blew up
Not really a bad thing... It has/had a th350 now and I would like to put in a 700r4.
Is there a certain model of the 700r4 I need to look for? I need a non-electronic one. Thanks for the help.

Re: My trans just blew up
I'm a fan of the 91-93 pre computer 700r4's. Expect to move the trans xmember (no cost) and possibly shorten driveshaft. You will also nee a lockup kit and possibly a tv correction bracket.

Re: My trans just blew up
depending on what 350 trans you have you might not have to get driveline remade......i swapped a brunt up 700r4 to th350 with the long tail shaft there is only 5/8 difference between the 700r4 and the th350 with the 9in tailshaft......the 12in tail shaft in the link i posted is very uncommon so when most people say long tail shaft they mean 9in not the 12in....and might have to relocate and drill new holes in frame and bolt crossmember in new location.

Re: My trans just blew up
I went through this on my El Camino-
tv cable adjustment is critical, so if you can find one with the factory pieces on the intake manifold to connect to your carb, you're ahead of the game - if you're running an aftermarket carb, you may have to invest in a custom bracket setup (bowtieoverdrives.com) be sure your trans cooling lines are very clean, no old gunk in there, and an extra trans cooler in series with the radiator's trans cooler is a good investment '87-up 700r4s have the updated pump - you do NOT want 86 or earlier (you can check the numbers stamped on the pump housing near the front shaft) - IIRC, the number begins with a 7, not positive good luck |

Re: My trans just blew up
If you have a stock 350, look into a 200r4, they will bolt right up and no TV cable to mess with.

Re: My trans just blew up
Yes it is a 4speed. they can be built a little stronger but the best thing about them are the 4speed and the dont need a TV cable.
Hit up Clienbarger here on the board, he would be the best man for proper info, I am not really.

Re: My trans just blew up
The 200R4 sounds like the ticket. There is a tranny shop next to my work. I will talke to those guys about it.
I would like to have a little more highway gear that what I have with the 3 speed.

Re: My trans just blew up
My transmission knowledge is very limited but I just recently swapped the powerglide out for a 200r4. I was thinking it would nearly a direct swap because the lenght is almost the same. They did move the crossmember and shortened the driveline a little bit. Then they had to install a TV cable and a certain kind of lock up controlled by a switch installed on the dash. And they built a different bracket for the gear selector down on the tranny. It drives just really nice smooth through gears. But I havent got a chance to cruise the highway for too many miles because I need to fix the brakes! Can't post any pics for some reason.

Thanks for that info. I would like to see some pics of the install when you can show them.

I put a 700r4 in my 74 Pick-up and had to slide the crossmember back. Does your truck have a long tail shaft 350, if so then you will not need to do anything to driveshaft. TCI makes a full pressure valve body that eliminates the TV cable adjusting the line pressure, by doing this a misadjust TV will only make for funky shift points but not destroy the transmission like a stock valve body will do.

Re: My trans just blew up
Im not sure which tail shaft I have now. That will also determine if I keep the 350 or go to the 200.

Re: My trans just blew up
concur with Q-ship - 2004R has a tv cable and it needs to be adjusted properly. 2004R is a good choice if you are replacing the TH350 - common length in most cases. Here are some resources on setting this stuff up. The reason for the importance of proper setup of the tv cable is in order to maintain the appropriate pressure on the valve body - poor setup can result in very short tranny life.
Excellent tv cable article http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php Auto Trans Service Group (tech manuals, etc) http://www.atsg.biz/ Shifter and conversion stuff of automatic o/d's http://www.shiftworks.com/ TCI article on importance of valve body pressure and tv cable adjustment (and a sales pitch for their constant pressure valve body which avoids the reason for concerns) http://www.cpgnation.com/forum/tci-c...vides-234.html Bowtie o/d - excellent automatic o/d resource http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/index.shtml GM o/d trans installer kit (for confirming appropriate valve body presure and the monitoring trans temp and a filter is included) http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=572 "E-Z" TV cable - I'd buy this thing if I were installing one - it self adjusts http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=231 TV Made EZ systems/parts http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...SUBCAT&CATID=W Forum posts on the subj: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=418418 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=1#post4231098 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=424188 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...49#post4038749 trans length discussion http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=420066 trans mount option http://www.persh.org/pickup/700R4.htm |

Re: My trans just blew up
Either trans is good, and swapping them isn't hard. You should have plenty of room on the driveshaft splines to soak up the minor length difference and the crossmember is easy to move. The TV cable isn't hard to setup, just do a little research and make sure it's set up correctly. Worse case get it as close as you can and have a shop verify the line pressure for you. Unless you're waaay off it won't explode provided you have a proper bracket and do your homework. The overdrive and modern feel of the trans is worth the minor inconvenience of a little setup for the tv. Plus, if you can spring for a proper TV bracket setup (my B&M setup was $100.00) it's that much easier. I used to be a little wary of the dreaded cable thing, but with a little research and some well-placed questions you'll find it's nowhere near as difficult as the Internet might lead you to believe
