Differnces between 65 and 66 Fleetside?????
Hello All. Been Lurking around her a while. I am the new owner of a 1965 short bed/Fleetside chevy pickup. It Needs some work so I also purchased a 1966 truck as well.
Question: What are the major and minor differences between the 1965 and 1966 fleetside models? I need to know what parts will work and which one will not? also: Stay tuned I will be selling lots of parts that I do not need off of my parts truck. |

First and foremost . I believe the only major difference (which isn't all that major) between the 65 and 66 is the 66 has back-up lights. Minor differences:

Re: Differnces between 65 and 66 Fleetside?????
emergency brake cable routing is different on 66.
All 66 had 2 speed wiper and reverse light, and seat belts. 66 steering wheel is different. 66 has two green lines on the temperature gauge, 65, one. 66 had a 250 cubic inch 6 available, so there is an extra option the kick plate tag. all minor stuff, for interchange purposes.

Re: Differnces between 65 and 66 Fleetside?????
Great. Thanks for the info. I have seen some back up lights on the 66 and some 66 without. Mine does not have them. Maybe it was a dealer option? Are the Backup lights bolt on or recessed into the fender? (can't tell from the pictures)
Anyone know where I can purchase a data plate online? Mine is missing. What should the Data plate look like? I have seen a few examples-just want to make sure I get the correct one. Not sure why GM would put the VIN #'s on something that could be so easily removed/rust out or Fall off? My 66 Mustang has them stamped into the Fender Apron. |

Re: Differnces between 65 and 66 Fleetside?????
These trucks Vin tags are located along the driver door opening, the 5th digit will tell you the year 5 for 65' 6 for 66' C14 short bed C15 long bed.and a tag along the kick panel inside where you left foot would be, tells the weight and color options ect... basically all the parts to be concerned about interchange from 1964-66 -order a LMC truck cataloge thats a good refrence and shows diagrams of parts and a vin decoder.

Re: Differnces between 65 and 66 Fleetside?????
VIN should also be stamped into the front driver side frame rail (and one other less easy to see spot that I forget...) But if you lean in over the driver front fender and lok down, the number should be stamped (readable in that orientation) along the top of the c-channel of the frame rail. Good way to confirm if you have the original cab/chassis combo.
