tbi block in my 84
The 350 in my c10 locked up. I found a great deal on a 88 350 tbi engine and im going to just put my edelbrock performer rpm intake and carb on it. My question is with the fuel pump. The 88 block has the fuel pump block off plate which I have already removed. It has the hole going down into the block, Im just wondering if I can take the mechanical fuel pump and rod out of my old 350 and put them into the newer block. If so, how is it done? Also I need to buy a timing set for the tbi block and i dont kno if they differ from pre 87 timing sets. Thanks for any help

You may have to get the block machined, I had a couple blocks that had the hole but it didn't go all the way through,

is there a way to check without pulling the motor all the way down? if thats the case, Ill just install an electric fuel pump and regulator. Any ideas on what brands to buy? Im on a budget so the cheaper the better
Or can i take the rod put of my old block and slide it into the new one to see if it goes in far enough? My main concern is that the newer block doesnt have a provision on the cam for operating the mechanical fuel pump Last edited by 84Longbed; 10-26-2011 at 12:25 AM. Reason: im a tard |

Pull the cover, grind the tip off of a cheap screwdriver (get it kinda round, get rid of the point) and see if it goes all the way through.

The cam may not have the lobe to drive the fuel pump pushrod. The intake won`t be a direct bolt on, as the center bolts on the 88 are a diff angle. You can grind the holes to elongate them.

i had a similar issue with a 4.3 v6 motor and the fuel pump bolted in and the engine was fine.. it was a couple of years later they were made so you couldnt do that

I kno I have to elongate the center intake holes, that's the least of my worries. I also got some tapered washers in case I don't like the angle of the bolt on the intake. What about the timing gears and chain, are they different between pre 87 and tbi?

If it's a roller block, this would be a perfect time to upgrade, CHEAP!!!
Roller cams use a different timing set, the bolt circle on the end of the cam is different. |

What would you recommend for some cheap upgrades? I kno I can change over to a roller, but I've been all over craigslist looking for parts but no luck. And I doubt I'd find them in the junkyard.

An LT4 cam is just about what we used to call an "RV" cam. Good power increase over stock and better mileage. Hang out at the 4th generation Corvette sites, I've bought two from those for $50 apiece. You'll have to pony up for new lifters and you'll have to get the spider and dogbones, but you should be able to find all that on sleazebay.

You dont happen to have one of those 50 dollar cams for sale do you lol? I check fleabay and the cams are running about 200 bones, and i looked up spider but didnt find that piece that goes under the intake. Anyone know the proper name for it? And i read somewhere that I can use lifters from a 4.3, is that true? Oh yea and does the LT4 cam have a lobe for the mechanical fuel pump? I just found out my current one does so I may just stick with what I got for now, unless I come across the parts for cheap

this is very true when i got a pre87 block (7000 mile creat motor) i had to holow out the 4 center bolts so my tbi intake would bolt up then silicone and its lasted almost a year with no leaks

The fuel pump cam lobe will be there. I had many 88-94 TBI engines apart and they kept the cam lobe. The later blocks didnt not have a block-off plate cause there were no holes drilled. If there is a block off plate then its a good chance the hole is there. slide the rod in and turn it over and see if it moves back and forth.

Aright so I got an update. And some questions while Im at it. My fuel pump pushrod moves when I turn the crank. Im about ready to clean the new motor and pop the old one out, I have everything except for some bolts and the flywheel. So I bought the oil filter adapter but it didnt come with bolts. I think I need two 5/16 bolts 1 1/4 in length but I cant be sure. Anyone kno where I can find wat bolts I need? Also when i pulled the intake off, I found one side of the exhaust ports almost clogged shut with carbon. How can I clean it without damaging it? Almost forgot, I've had a almost new fuel pump sitting in the garage but I dont know if I can use it. It has only 2 ports, and my current one has 3

So the 3 port fuel pump is just a return style. You can run the 2 port, just plug the return line to the tank in your truck. As for. The plugged exhaust port that u see in the intake area, Its just the exhaust cross over or the egr port can't remember on the newer block. Just knock the carbon off and vacuum it with a shop vac.

thanks man, the fuel pump has really been the only thing holding me up. I got a new intake already tho, its a Weiand Xcelerator with the 4 center holes already drilled out for tbi heads. Couldnt pass it up for 40 bucks, ya kno? Ok so I got the gasket kit and didnt see the two rubber pieces that make up the rest of the intake gasket. The gaskets that go between the heads and intake are there, but not the front and rear pieces that separate the intake and block. Do I need them or do I just RTV the hell out of it?

Ok, I got the motor in, everything is finished except i need to bolt the headers on and carb. I noticed theres a bunch of wires coming from the firewall that werent hooked up and I was wondering wat they were and if they could be removed. Ill post pictures as soon as i figure out how to

ok since theres about 10 or 15 pictures ill just start with the passenger side...oops meant driver side
-The first picture shows two connectors (the smaller of the two looks like it is tied into the wire that goes to the larger connector) -The second picture shows where they are connected -The third picture shows the 3rd wire that comes out of the same harness but isnt connected to the first two...well not that I can see -The fourth picture shows which harness the 3 wires go into Im not sure where the harness enters the firewall, i was getting lazy after i had spent all day putting the starter, alternator, water pump, and power steering pump on and wiring the few that needed it. But I can look tomorrow. I think they go into the same plug that the headlight harness goes into but dont quote me on that. Ill post the other wires after I see if anyone is still reading this thread, thanks |

I would have to look at one of my parts trucks to tell u forsure. When I carb'd my truck I just wrapped all the unessary wires up and ziptied them out of the behind the motor. Didn't want to mess up the computer and have the ignition stop working. But I also was still runnin the stock elec fuel pump.

Thanks id appreciate it. I dont have anything left for the computer to run, I have an hei dizzy. and the mechanical fuel pump ended up just bolting right up so im using that
