Need help to identify old cab
My father-in-law recently bought a piece of property which has what appears to be an early 60s Chevy truck cab sitting on the ground. The property is a good 2.5 hour drive away. We will be making the trip this weekend to take pictures.
I know nothing about old trucks and was wondering, when i go to take pictures, is there anything i should be sure to look for and get pictures of that would help identify it. Also is there anything specific i should be sure to take pictures of in order to find out what it's worth and eventually salvage it if it's actually worth something. Additional info... It is just the cab with front fenders and grille. There is no hood. The cab has both doors and all the windows and the dash looks like it is in fair condition. Pictures will be posted Sunday. So just to be clear i want to know if there's anything specific i should get pics of because it's a bit of a long trip and i won't be going back for awhile and i want to make sure i get all the pics i need the first time. Thanks for any help. |

Re: Need help to identify old cab
Welcome to the site! The things you should take pictures of would be any emblems, take pics of the grill and the interior. Then just get an overall picture of the whole cab. We are excellent at recognizing old trucks and values here so dont worry! We'll take care of ya! Good luck in your travel and hope its a real neat truck! Andrew.

Re: Need help to identify old cab
the vin nbr will not be on the door sill. it will be on the door jam; it could be on the frt , the top or the rear if there is one . most cannot believe to look at the top of the door jam. that is the body part of the door opening
ron the sill is the bottom part -never there |

Re: Need help to identify old cab
Thanks for everyone's replies. This helps alot! I will post pics as soon as i can. Oh and just to be sure i should look on the driver's side for the VIN? I'm only asking because it's gonna take some effort to get the doors open. It's been sitting there for many years. Shovels and chain saws will be needed, lol.

Re: Need help to identify old cab
If you can't get the doors open to get at the VIN, be sure to take pics of the front fender emblems. If they are original to the truck the emblems alone will tell the year. But then again, if it's been sitting on the ground long enough that you must dig to get the doors open, you may as well dig a deep enough hole to bury it. LOL

Re: Need help to identify old cab
After about an hour, we got the doors open. Even though it was only a couple inches under the surface, the problem was since it was in the woods there were a bunch of roots to dig out to get the doors open. I do not have the tools or manpower to completely dig it out or transport it. If somebody might want it they will have to come and get it themselves.
I took a total of 39 Hi-res pictures. Below is a sample. So now with the pics posted you are welcome to ID it. Also whether you think it is worth anything or not would help too. If anyone wants any or all of the hi-res pics I can email them to you. VIN# (i'm sure the number that is scratched is a 3): http://rc.runryder.com/fastphoto/35035/VIN.jpg Cert tag: http://rc.runryder.com/fastphoto/35035/cert.jpg Driver's side: http://rc.runryder.com/fastphoto/35035/side.jpg Interior: http://rc.runryder.com/fastphoto/35035/interior.jpg Grill: http://rc.runryder.com/fastphoto/35035/grill.jpg Fender emblem: http://rc.runryder.com/fastphoto/35035/emblem.jpg Some more info... The passenger door lever/latch is fully functional as well as the window lever. All windows are in good condition except the windshield has a crack in one spot where something has hit. The gas tank and cap look good. The seat frame appears fully functional as well. The only major rust appears to be on the floor. The gauges on the dash look good but what condition they are really in who knows. |

Re: Need help to identify old cab
The earlier links can be viewed (they are much clearer) by copying each link beginning with rc.runryder~ and pasting it into a new window. Don't copy the http:// or it doesn't work.
That thing has had a hard life. I see very little worth salvage. If you're not a 60-66 enthusiast, I’d suggest the only things worth salvaging are the C30 emblems. They might be easy to sell. In addition to the steering wheel and gauge cluster there are other parts that someone might want such as the radiator aprons, parts from the heater, door handles, hood hinges, cowl panel, maybe the glass is good, and the roof panel might be worth something to a person with a rusted out roof. But for someone that isn’t really into this type project the whole thing is probably only worth scrap metal value, since the small parts won’t bring much money compared to how much work it is to remove and attempt to sell them. |

Re: Need help to identify old cab
Thanks everyone for your help. Having found a couple of vin decoders i have to agree it is a 64. Also it was a 2wd assembled in St. Louis.
Regarding what you said mark, i would also agree. However, i'm in no hurry to get rid of it. If i wanted to see if anyone were interested, where would be the best place to list it? |
