spark plug indexing?
ive been hearing alot of mixed thoughts on this lately.
if indexing spark plugs makes a difference or not. so let me ask some of you before i think about about doing it or not. is it worth it? what gains are there, if any? should the ground strap be in the 12 oclock position or 6 oclock position? we index the plugs in the race car, but thats because it has big dome pistons... for clearance, not for performance gains... well at least thats what i thought. maybe im missing something. fill me in, id like to know more about this. thanks |

Re: spark plug indexing?
on a street car you'll never notice it.. but at the track you'll see it in e.t
I've always wonder what would happen if you cut the ground off and welded on a washer that the hole was the gap you wanted.. it have a larger area than the ground strap, and not need indexing.. |

Re: spark plug indexing?
I found nothing on the dyno or on the track with being overly anal about indexing on a small closed chamber head like a SBC AS LONG AS the spark kernel wasn't shouded by the ground strap. I mean there is about 180° there that is ALL WRONG for sure, but I havent found any measurable proof at the 797 n/a HP level that there is any 3HP in spark plug indexing,, and believe me,, we looked and looked for those last 3 HP
But that's just my combination,, your results may vary.

Re: spark plug indexing?
Like Marv, I haven't found any notable difference on the dyno or dragstrip to make indexing spark plugs worthwhile.
However, I do have to index my plugs because of the size and shape of the dome of my pistons and how close they come to the heads. In other words, if the ground straps are in the wrong position, the piston can kiss them and close up the gap. |
