Newbie in over his head
In my 72 k20 I'm attempting to replace u/ball joints, and repack the bearings, trying to save a buck. Literally had to watch a video to see what and where these were. I got the spicer hub assembly off which wanted to come off as 1. Was able to remove the inner bearing lock nut with my fingers, but can't get the thrust washer off. Any advice and pictures would be appreciated.

Re: Newbie in over his head
If you've already removed the nut, pull the washer straight out. I usually use a set of picks, the 90 deg and the offset ones seem to work the best for me. the inner and outer bearings will come out along with the hub assembly once you remove the second nut (behind the washer). I hope this helps.

Re: Newbie in over his head
There should be a notch the washer slides in. Onetime my washer spun a bit and the washer was wedged in one directrion. A few taps the opposite way and I was able to pull it out with two picks/hooks.
Try tapping on it...

Re: Newbie in over his head
thanks for the help I was looking for a tab, found the 2 picks worked well. Struggled a bit but finally got the axel out. Will attempt the knuckle removal, and joints removal today. Everyone I've talked to is scaring me a bit with how critical putting it back together is. searched online but cant find good details on my front end.

Re: Newbie in over his head
There was a long thread last year about R&R and adjusting the bearings. Not rocket science. I made my pic tool out or a coathanger and carry it in my offroad tool bag.

Re: Newbie in over his head
I wasn't paying attention to the hub. You are correct you are missing some parts.

Re: Newbie in over his head
You should have had a snap ring on your axle stub....the spring should be between the axle gear and the retainer you have in pic #1 you should have an actuator cam between the two with a pin thru it holding it to the dial.

Re: where can i find info for doing my U and ball joints on my k20s
It looks like you are missing hub parts. Did you just take those off the truck? If so whoever was in there before didn't know what was going on.

Re: where can i find info for doing my U and ball joints on my k20s
I did just take those off the truck, and I stopped by and showed a couple mechanics and they both thought it looked fine and not missing anything.

Re: Newbie in over his head
Good information in this thread. I just removed the same hubs from my truck to detail them. What are you using for a gasket? I notice yours are in pieces like mine were when i removed them. They are very thin, also.

I'm stopping at NAPA today to see what they can come up with. I'll let you know. I'm only removing the lockout and nothing more. I'll provide any pictures that you want, but I'm not removing everything like you are. Here is a shot to show how far I've taken mine down. I don't think this is what you're looking for, though. |

Re: Newbie in over his head
Looks like we'll be making new ones from gasket material or a type of RTV. Quad 4x4 shows them on their website, but they are out of stock.
NAPA told me I had to buy an entire roll of material, so I'm looking around. |
