Pro street too tailgate or not too tailgate ?

Well...
I can't decide I seem to be torn...
Without a tailgate it might not look finished..and i would have to Fill in the box/gate corners

With a tailgate you might not see all of those big wheel tubs that i made to make them look kinda factory....and the fancy floor I think I am going to make.

So I am asking the question....too tailgate or not too tailgate ?
What do you think?

I'd say tailgate for a finished look. Im sure you can see the tires from underneath, right?

Well when i drop the air the truck is 2" off the ground...so you wouldn't see the tires but then the box top is only about 3 feet off the ground ...so you would see the tops of the tubs for sure.

To me, a truck has got to have a tailgate to look right. It finishes off the back of the truck.

Well thats a option i considered but I dont think thats the right look for it so i have ruled that one out...

well not really....
It's just going into high build primer right now and I need to make a couple of changes to put the gate on. But after a day online of looking at trucks i am leaning towards the tailgate look.

I can't remember which thread it was in but there was a picture of a truck that had the middle portion of the tailgate cut out and a smoked plexi piece in it's place. I looked killer.

Tailgate is a necessity in my opinion. Trucks just don't look right without them.

Only prerunners and pro 4's can't have tailgates, otherwise it looks like your missing something.

I'm tubbed, and from behind (with the rake of the truck) you can still see them with the tailgate on. Besides, 90% of traffic rides higher than my truck so you'd always be looking down.

I am going to run a tailgate on my stepside, but with a little twist...
I always loved the Pro/Mod & Outlaw 10.5 look so I'm planning on cutting flaps in my tailgate.
You will be able to see them open going down the road when the wind goes through them.
But it will look inconspicuous from a distance.
I forget what they call these. But it just helps let the burnout smoke out.
There was an Old Chevy Stepside truck on Pass Time that done it.
Not sure if it was The Pass time, Trucks edition @ San Antonio Raceway.
Could not find a video clip of it. It looked sweet! Ole' Ken Herring pointed it out and said it was cool.

Well I am thinking tailgate.......but i think it's going to need to be a power up and down kinda thing.....Ya i know ...but I got carried away with the rest of it why not the tailgate...any ideas for that or anyone seen one ?

great pics 1bad62(always finds the coolest stuff) if your are going running a rear bumper its needs a tailgate , if you are running a roll pan and all the cool tin work thats in your truck you could leave the tail gate off and it works killer!duude you are the kind of cool duude that could fall into dog poop and come out wearing a nice brown suit

I found a truck with the tailgate like I was talking about.
But the way I will do it will look inconspicuous from a distance.
It will be painted same color as the truck.

Running a roll pan right now but am considering punching a rear bumper throught the pan.I openly admitt I got way to carried away with this build and have passed stupid on it along time ago. I only hope that it doesn't look like a 70's disco truck when it's all done...LMAO

thank you sir, more to come this spring. We have another full renovation on the engine to do, as well as some refinements to the body and interior.


If you want to do the power up and down, it would be very cool to do it with NO showing support chains/links/rails. I think it would be absolutely wicked to use an actuator (something like a Belimo used in hvac controls) to open and close the gate. Might be tough to fit something in there. Bimba air cylinders are also pretty cool if you have an air source on board.

Thanks man thats a great idea.....I was thinking of a power set up with a small 12 volt motor and a pulley...flick the down button it unlocks the gate with a solenoid set up.....then it engauges the down process...flick the raise button it raises and just at it comes closed again it relocks the gate again...But i could split one of the rear posts and hide a cylinder in it..instead..
