My wheel idea for 20" steelies

Plan A is 15" steelies with stock dogdish caps. Here is plan B: I was thinking 20" steelies would look cool with dogdish caps, but no one makes them. I know about the dodge stockers, but welding the holes up in the center and the fact they are the wrong lugnut pattern lead me to another thought. Coker tire has 20" steel rims in 5x5, but the widest they make them is 6" wide. So my thought was to see if a wheel company can widen those. Alternatively, I was wondering if it would be easier to take the dodge wheel, remove the center, and put the Coker center in it, if of course it fit. Any thoughts? I'm crazy, good idea??

Re: My wheel idea for 20" steelies

I have considered this as well. I think it's do-able, but the biggest thing is the diameter (O.D.) of the Coker center in relation to the I.D. of the Dodge outer shell. If it's the same, you're good. If not, then that can be a huge issue.

I did a bunch of research and found a few companies that make wheel parts. The one with the best selection is Marsh Racing Wheels:
http://www.mrt-wheels.com/catpages/wheel%20parts.html

There are pros and cons to this. As far as the Pros, you can have a cool looking wheel that'll possibly accept a stock hubcap. The Cons are the cost, and the fact that a 20" steel wheel with any kind of width will be a heavy mutha.

Delmo went through this as well, and wound up buying 20" smoothies from Centerline and adapting a stock cap. In the long run, it'll be close to the same price, and it'll be a whole lot lighter.

Re: My wheel idea for 20" steelies

How much are the centerline smoothies tho? Only other option i see is running good adapters for 6 lug then using the dodge or 09-2010 nissan titan or armada steel spares.

Centerline isn't an option for me. They don't have the "look" of a traditional steel wheel...to flat.
How much do the dodge wheels weigh?

Have you spoken w/a Coker rep yet?

I would verify what the actual 20" wheel looks like as well as what type of hub-cap they accept as the pic attached for their product view is the same pic pasted over & over regardless of wheel diameter.

Many larger diameter steel wheels have noticeable transitions from the wheel hoop to the center hub. Be sure you know what the actual appearance of the wheel you're looking into will be.

It also looks like those wheels would accept the car type caps that snap on agaist 'nubs' on the inside suface of the raised hub portion on the wheel vs the 6x-87 truck dog-dish caps which snap on agaist the outside of the raised hub portion.

Re: My wheel idea for 20" steelies

The biggest problem with newer 18/20" OEM steel wheels is they have too much backspacing so they require thick spacers to get the wheels to fit in the fenderwell. They still don't look right with the wheel center so close to the outer lip. I've tried reversing the center on one of my 18x8" Titan wheels but then it didn't have enough backspacing- like only 2.25". The drop center isn't wide enough to adjust the wheel center closer to the center of the rim like factory 8" rally's with 4" backspacing. Theres more info on fitting titan steelies on pg 2-3 in my Goldilocks build thread.

Another option instead of filling in the slots to make a smoothie is to fit a moon disc over the wheel center, then add hubcap clips to hold the factory caps.

Scoti, I wasn't planning on the stock dogdish fitting on the Coker wheel via nubs. That would be a bonus, but I was thinking I would need to put some type of clip on those to make the cap fit. I would definitely get a picture with specs from Coker before taking tha plunge.

I called today and got some info, but not what I really wanted to know. I'm hoping to get a call or email back soon. I first called Coker and the guy says they don't make them, Specialty Wheel does. Well that was half true after a call to Specialty wheel. They make all sizes except the 20 inch. The 20 is made in-house at Honest Charlie's Speed Shop. So I'm waiting for a picture and some specs, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: My wheel idea for 20" steelies

go to tirerack.com, do a search for that tire size, and it will tell you under the spec tab the approved rim width range. For a 235/45/20, it says 7.5-9" for a Bridgestone.

Re: My wheel idea for 20" steelies

i've seen the specs before but they can be stretched...
i've had a 275 50 15 on 6.5 rim
they suggest 7.5-9.5 so thats what im wondering?
plus the 235 45 20 has a pretty tall sidewall...

Why?
235's are common on duallys which utilize 6.5" wheels so it would work. Wouldn't be ideal, but would work. IMO, a 6" wide 20" diameter wheel would look like an old wagon wheel on a model-t.

Re: My wheel idea for 20" steelies

I really doubt a 275/50 will fit anything less than 8" wide, let alone 6.5".
I say this because a 275 is usually what I use for all of my cars that run a 10" wide wheel...methinks there is no way that will seal or mount up with all of that real estate on either side

Re: My wheel idea for 20" steelies

I put the Dodge 20 steels on my truck. Went with a 1 1/4 adapter and they fit fine with a 255/35-20 tire. It was pretty close to rubbing the outer fender lip so I messaged it a bit.

Re: My wheel idea for 20" steelies

the more sidewall you have the wider tire you can fit on a narrow wheel.

I have the dodge wheels. Added 1" of bs to the front and widened the rears to 10's with like ~3" of bs I think. Its not much.

they are heavy but I can't say I notice the weight. Its really not much more than a billet. Its will spin the tires in nearly any gear and stops just fine with 4 wheel disc.

stockton wheel.

I've heard they went out of business. They were a pain to deal with. Told me 4-6 weeks to complete. It ended up taking a little over 3 months.

Re: My wheel idea for 20" steelies

I've got 20" centerline smoothies on my later model crewcab and they weigh more the the dodge 20", they took quite a bit of weight to balance out on both sets of tires that I had on them. The look was cool but I think I'm going back to 15" or 17" Steelies with a fat tire since I mostly use the truck for towing anymore. I've ran them painted with dog dish caps for about 5 years and I think its time for a change

I was curious about this very thing (If Centerlines forged wheels were lighter, would the Smoothies be lighter vs comparable sized wheels of different materials?).
