What steering column are you running?

I am getting close to picking out a steering column for the 53. I am thinking about going with a ididit tilt. My buddy says I should just go to the local pick and pull and save money to use else were. So, what column are you running? I have a mustang II.

On my '56 sedan, I used an Ididit. It's really nice and I guess you get what you pay for because it was a lot of money but on this truck I'm building, I bought a chrome column from CPP. It was pretty cheap. I'm not driving the truck yet so I don't now how it will do but so far so good.

I modified my original stock one and kept the original wheel, I like the look of it and to save a couple bucks,

I used a tilt column out of a early 70's van, it doesn't have the key in the column so you can keep the key in the dash. It was cheap and looks good with a wooden grant wheel on it. Good luck.

I also have a Flaming River Column and steering wheel in my 54. I have a Mustang II set up also. If you go with power steering us a 79-90 Mustang R&P Napa #22-203-F. I have a 74-78 rack right now but it is too sensitive for me. The newer one is less sensitive and provides better road feel. Make sure it is 2 3/4-3 turns lock to lock.

I went with a later fullsize van column as I didn't care about key location and wanted all controls on the column. It's a little bulkier than the 70s columns but easier to find. I've seen people use Astro van columns too.

Remember though if it has a column mounted shift, you'll need to work things out if you're putting in an overdrive transmission as the older columns are PRND21.

Whether you'll be able to find a good column at your local pull-a-part is what's going to make the difference. Not much point in dropping $50 for a column and then having to spend $$$ to rebuild it all. At that point you might as well get an Ididit or Flaming River.

i wish they still offered them.
the seat in my 09 sierra goes all the way back to the rear seat for my legs
but the steering wheel is waaaay up there.

I will have a floor shift also. I like the looks of the flaming river or ididit, simple and clean. The sticker looks good, but my truck didnt come with one and I think tilt would be nice. OrrieG, going with the telescopic sounds.... Comfortable

It is also shorter than a standard GM auto column so the shift arm and column shaft are tight to the firewall.

Have you looked into a Corvette hub and steering wheel from the 70's

I'm putting the 63 caddy one in mine to give more room with the 05 silverado seats. not that I need the room (I'm a short a$$) but makes it more sellable if I ever decied to sell it.

As far as length goes I'm using a steering link out of a jeep cherokee since they come with u-joints vs rag joints and is spline on the the ps box end and doubleD on the colum end. I cut the shaft to whatever length I needed but never really measured it.

I used the Flaming River 30" polished column Part #FR20005SS. That is measured from the end of the column to the top of the column that has the tilt part attatched. Then you need an adapter and a steering wheel. My whole set up was over $800. Then you have to get a u joint at the top and bottom and a spline to connect them. I also used a anti vibrate coupling at the point where the coupling meets the steering box. Hopes this helps.

I just got the "old school" column from ididit...$129.00 and it is super simple. have not installed it yet but will post some pics when I get it in.
