Insurance on your ride
Hey guys ,
I'm getting down to a few weeks before my build is complete , I have more money in my build than I will ever insure it for . Not sure if I am going to go to a classic insurer ... my build is far from a stock truck with 42's and a cummins . The truck is basicly a weekend sunday get a little mud on the tires but nothing to extreme , its not going to do a lot of miles . How are you guys insuring you rides ? Thanks Greg |

Re: Insurance on your ride
I only had liability on my truck when I got it done last time. After it cought on fire & burned I realized how much money actually went up in smoke (literally)... It's being re-built now and when it's done it will be appraised & insured for the appraised value. It might cost me more, but it can't cost more than what I'm putting into it now.

Re: Insurance on your ride
That sucks to hear buddy ... I actually just mounted up a big fire extinguisher in my beast ... plus its diesel .
I know what your saying about insuring for full coverage ... I have a pile of invoices for atleast 30k . I would like to find a company thats just going to insure for total loss ... I'm never going to turn in a claim for some BS stuff ... I built this truck . Thanks for the insite . |

Re: Insurance on your ride
Right now mine has full coverage.. However they are only covering it for what the sale value was back in 1974.. So Not going to get a bunch out of it right now. However once it is done I will get specialty insurance (USAA Does offer it) for the replacement value.

Re: Insurance on your ride
Even for my two projects I've got full coverage, it wasn't much more. I'd like to get a stated value policy for the 79 when it gets to a certain point and the 85 when it gets further along.

Re: Insurance on your ride
What year is your truck and is it going to be your daily?
Also remember some insurance companies won't insure lifted trucks!

Re: Insurance on your ride
I don't know if you're asking me, but I've got an 88 burb. Yes it will be my daily driver. In about another month, not that I'm counting days or anything!

Re: Insurance on your ride
Mine has full coverage at it's original price, but, like everyone else it seems, I plan to have it insured for more when it is all fixed up.

Never had a problem with insurance companies insuring lifted trucks or jeeps ... Think it was more of a problem with law enforcement , but after they seen I owned my own state inspection shop never got a ticket ... I allways build safe trucks . |

Re: Insurance on your ride
I would check out Hagerty. I have my '74 (and my Mark VII) insured through them, and it is substantially less expensive than my other cars. They do place a mileage restriction (6000 miles annually), but will also stress that they don't check the odometer readings, either. If you have the reciepts to back up the stated value, you shouldn't have any problem.

Re: Insurance on your ride
Hagerty, Grundy just to name a few that specilize in collector car insurance. It's normally cheaper than your daily driver and it will be a stated value.
State Farm is also handling collector cars now also.

Re: Insurance on your ride
Be careful with State Farm, I just left them because my rates were going up at ridiculous intervals. They have lose a lot of money in the south with Katrina, and they are trying to recoup the losses wit customers in the north. I switched to all state, which covered my 84 as a classic, and I'm saving $100 a month on my payment, and I have better coverage.

Re: Insurance on your ride
If you are eligible, check out USAA. I have nothing but good things to say about them. Cheap and good customer service.

Re: Insurance on your ride
My insurance company said that full coverage would not cover my costs. They set it up for a set amount that they would cover and it is more than I have spent to build it so I am happy.

Re: Insurance on your ride
I have my '85 Jimmy (lifted) occasional driver tagged historic and insured with Haggerty for stated value. I sent them pictures and stated the value, which they agreed on. It's inexpensive and the vehicle's covered for what it's worth...more than I have in it.
