Transmission Going bad?

alright well after replacing the clutch and rear main seal i finally got the truck back together, been riding it around for the past couple of days and came across a couple concerns 1) when leaving it in first and not shifting to second it makes a grinding noise, 2) when slowing down in first it makes a grinding noise, 3) when in another gear and coming to a stop it wont go into first without the truck being completely stopped 4) when going from second to third it makes a grinding noise and then engages into third 5) when pressing the clutch pedal all the way down it makes a noise which it didn't make before when i would press the clutch all the way down...... so im thinking some were in the reassembly i messed something up, any ideas as to what it could be? ill upload a video in a little bit isnt very good but it shows a couple of the noises im talking about

Well, i can tell you one thing. First gear was not synchronized in many of these old trannys. you almost have to be completely stopped to go into first. As far as the grinding noises, sounds like you need a little bit more adjustments to get it right.

Tony, the noise sounds like lifters to me. The balancer wobble could be because the balancer isn't properly installed or, to me, more likely the crankshaft bearings need replaced.

I think the motor needs overhauled. But hey, I'm not a mechanic, I'm a parts replacer. I have rebuilt 3 SBCs but still no mechanic.

the rocker arms i adjusted them all a couple months ago but maybe they do need a readjustment and yes multiple people have told me it is probably the crank bearings but currently i just don't have enough money to rebuild it, ive seen the rebuild kits go for about $900 and that doesnt even include the machine work.... honestly $900 isn't alot of money but it is when you dont have any major income.... and did you hear some of the grinding noise from the transmission?

haha yea they are pretty comfy nd yea man them cortezes are about two years old but man ever since i started working on my truck they have been taking a beating

what i heard and saw was first sounds like you need to replace your alt. bearings, your valves need to be adjusted , or you have an exhaust leak making the ticking sound, the clutch peddle squeak sounds it needs some grease, sounds like the spring and cross shaft are real dry....looks like your clutch peddle is having to go to far down to disengage the clutch....that would make the gear grind in the trans then you shift up or down....try adjusting the clutch where you have more peddle , right at the last of the film i think your shifter was rattling try holding it and see if it stops making noise ....maybe tis will help a little...

ive adjusted the valves and came to the conclusion that its not that because i loosened each one till it knocked then tightened them till it stopped and while the knocking from the lifters was going on there was still the other ticking noise there, exhaust i will have to look into that later on, and honestly i didnt want to give up on the standard transmission but sadly ive given up hope, i picked up a 350 turbo and ill probably install that in there later on in the week im still planing on keeping standard and hopefully one day puting it back in but for now im going automatic

Fat Tony: good luck on the truck....you said you tightened the valve adjustment down till it quit knocking ? did you tighten them any more after they were quite....most will tell you that you need to go 1/2 turn more after they stop knocking....i like to go 1/4 more....its always worked for me ...but you need to go tighter either way...unless you have solid lifters. if you don't you will always have lifter noise above idle ...

No, I doubt that... if you went another half turn on solid lifters, the valves would not seat all the way and you would have some backfiring/popping. That, and the fact that 99+% of all gen1 Chevy engines will have hydraulic lifters.

The other error in this thread is the main bearings being worn... they may be - but I absolutely guarantee if they were worn to the point where you can see the crankshaft wobble - it would have seized or sent something out of the block long ago.

if you have solids then you have to set them with the recommended clearances for the cam you are running, yes the will be noisy
speaking of your clutch. did you insert that wedge shaped piece that goes on the end of the adj rod where it goes into the t/o arm

well it starts missfiring as you adjust it but gets better after a couple seconds, honestly im not sure weather i have solid lifters or not, to me they both look the same but i dont know

nd hopefully not alot of people have told me its going to be that the bearings are worn, and that i might as well just rebuild the whole engine but none of that is cheap..... right now im contemplating getting a 350..... the boss at the shop i work at has two, one that should be running and one that supposedly wasn't getting taken care of so ill probably end up building one from two....... question. if the plastic on the timing chain breaks and the guy replaces the timing chain but doesn't take out all the plastic that was left behind in the oil pan and then the plastic clogs up the oil pump what harm could that do to the engine?..... boss said that after that happen the engine started knocking but its still worked any ideas?
