1986 manual transmission swap poll

I have a 1986 LWB c10 2 wheel drive with a colum shift (3 on the tree) I want to swap a manual shift overdrive transmission in its place. I am not exactly sure what would be a viable swap candidate. I am asking for experienced answers. I do not want to use a sm465 as it is not overdrive and it requires a large hump in the floor. also my truck has a hydraulic clutch.

archie =) =) =)

Re: 1986 manual transmission swap poll

well you could try to find a nv4500 at the junk yard or go to nv4500.com and get one out for a 96 to 2000 because all gears have secros and the ratios are better. may have to go to the junkyard and get collom (avoid the unsitly collom and floor shifters) if you dont plan on making it a 4x4 just use the factry bell housing for the transmission i dont like the slave setup but aa has a bell housing that uses the clutch fork setup

im getting ready to swop my sm465 out for the nv4500 and put a dana 60 up front the 4x4 trans cost me $1,799.95 fully rebilt with shipping and no core charge the adaptors cost me $818.65 that was for item# 27-0032 and a parts truck cost $1000.00 but thats a 5 speed 4x4 convertion for a 1 ton

you could also get a world class T5 .... im pushing 600hp so that wasnt an option for me

Re: 1986 manual transmission swap poll

My truck is an original 4 speed with OD, the tranny is the chevy version of the np A833. It is LIKE the 4 speeds that came in chryslers back in the late 60s and 70s. Final drive in 4th is 0.78:1 I beieve. There was one for sale up here on kijiji (craigslist equivalent) with a bellhousing, shifter (they are specific to this tranny but still made by Hurst), and complete clutch setup for about $500 canadian.

Re: 1986 manual transmission swap poll

I'm looking to do the same thing to my 78 C10 3 on the tree and have been leaning towards the A833 as well. It's not a "truck" transmission like the SM465 but is a sideloader resembling the saginaw and muncie. It was a factory option in the latter part of our truck's build run. Keith Seymore has one in his. Nice setup and would be a fairly easy conversion....

Re: 1986 manual transmission swap poll

Keeping the low hump floor means you'll need a car size tranny.
The Saginaw 4speed with a Hurst shifter, TKO Borg Warner F-Body 5speed, GM New Process A833, or Borg Warner F-Body T56 with the forward shifter mod.

Re: 1986 manual transmission swap poll

It is the original tranny so I guess you could say it is a "truck " tranny. Im not sure if I have a high hump or a low one.
