Will this work?
Building a 03 5.3 for my 72 LWB and want some opinions on this again, I want to make a nice DD with a little pep. I decided to stay EFI
Here is the plan, please jump in on anything I might have wrong. Bought 243 heads, plan to port them.. Street port or CNC ? I am told street is just under valves. What components should I build this with? Rockers, rods, lifters? Add comp cam, 54-408-11 seems to be the most recommended I see for what I want. Have beehive springs? Keep or change? Doug thorley long pipes seem to be a no brainier X pipe Have intake from Tahoe' wil this be ok or should I change? I plan to locate coil packs behind intake and use competition gm valve covers and that slick ass plug wire rail I saw here I ask here because, well you guys know and my friend who is a good mechanic on old school motors insist that I do what ever research is needed for this build. A reasonable request I know I just do not understand much so I have to ask... Please ask Any questions you have, I only know what I want not how to get it Thanks Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Will this work?
Here's my "novice" opinion...
Heads - those 243 flow pretty well. If you want to port them I would take them to a quality machine shop and have them done. At the valves would be fine, but you might as well have them fully ported while they're there. Cam - I'm not sure what the cam specs are, but anytime you change the cam, change lifters as well, you'll most likely have to change push rods and springs depending on the cams lift specs. Comp Cams should have a recommendation if you contact them. Intake - The Truck/Tahoe intake keeps up with the LS1 intake until it reaches about 5500 rpm, good for torque if you plan on doing any towing. I would say keep it due to the truck being a long bed, it's a decent intake. Maybe the more experienced guys will chime in and help out with more input... Good luck CigarMan, I could go for a Montecristo #4 right about now

Re: Will this work?
JNJ, Ty for your novice advise. I spoke with comp cams today and they recommended http://www.azproperformance.com/Dako...HX-67C-PU.html instead of the 54-408-11
I do hope some of the wiser ls swappers chime in as well. Btw, I'd choose the Monte 2 if I were you Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Will this work?
That 212/218 cam will work good in a daily driver style truck. You can pick up that cam and some ls6 yellow springs. You don't have to change the lifters as they are roller lifters and in a 03 model it doesn't have dod. Truck intake should work well with that cam and will keep low end torque. The 243's are a great flowing head and for this setup
I wouldn't have them porter but would have them milled to keep your compression ratio up. If memory serves me right the 243's are 64cc and the 5.3 heads are around 60cc. Hope this helps and you will really enjoy this setup In a truck. Posted via Mobile Device |
