305/700R4 Issues
Just picked up an '84 C10 shortbed and I noticed a few things right off the bat.
1st: Intermittent SES light at idle/stop-and-go driving. Clears itself after I get on the highway for a few miles. Smells a little rich at idle. Do these trucks have an ECM/diagnostic port? (I didn't think they did) 2nd: I belive it's a 700R4 trans, correct? Trans is "hunting" at low speed/rpm. Like after rolling a stop sign, it stays in 2nd, then drops to 1st, then back to 2nd quite suddenly. Not sure what to make of it. Any thoughts? Gratuitous pic opportunity: |

Re: 305/700R4 Issues
Hi.
Nice score, that is a beauty. Yes you have an ECM it sits behind / above the glove box. You will see it if you open the hatch and peek up under the dash. The diagnostics port is located under the dash, right under were the headlight switch is. Your SES light might be a trottle position error, mine behaved in a simlar way. As for the gearbox issue, have you changed oil, filter. Shecked oil level? If not I would start there.

Re: 305/700R4 Issues
My 84 had no port, and I don't think it had an engine light either...I don't think 700r4 wasn't available in 84...that's not to say someone didn't put one in there..

Re: 305/700R4 Issues
700R4 was available starting in 81 I believe with the new body style. If your truck is an 84, it shouldn't have an SES light at all. That was 87+ square bodies with the TBI setup. If yours has a computer at all, it was more than likely for a computer controlled quadrajet or maybe it had something to do with the electronic power valve, which started in 85. Is your truck a TBI setup? If so, your VIN tag has been swapped to say it's an 84 truck or someone swapped a complete TBI setup out of an 87+ truck into it. Either way it's a nice ride. I also second the TPS as being something to check, regardless of what year the truck is.

Re: 305/700R4 Issues
CA trucks have a SES light mounted smack in the center of the gauge bezel. This is a CA truck, with an ECM and a diagnostic port (found the port today while I was cleaning up the interior). Did a little reading last night and I assume I have what is known as the CCC (computer controlled carb). Anyway, I have a buddy at work with a scanner. I'm going to hook it up and see what code(s) it pulls.
SPID shows RPO code MXO - 4-spd auto trans. I'm assuming that means 700R4. |

Trans issues are solved. Incorrect TV cable. Installed correct cable and set to GM factory specs. Trans shifts like a champ now.
