Dana 70 in my 74?
Okay well i was under my truck looking at why my bed wasnt lining up with my cab, when i decided to see what kind of rear end i have
after what seemed to be a whole can of carb cleaner i see these numbers on the left side of the axle 38968 i think and on the right side GM 70, and on the back by the cover 70 Is it a Dana 70 in the rear of my truck? my truck is 74 chevy c10 swb 5 lug 8 leaf springs 12 bolts im stumped on this I started looking after seeing a few post on here saying you can find what axle you have by the numbers on it unless 70 is the year? |

Re: Dana 70 in my 74?
It should be a 12 bolt. I'm not sure what the 70 is on your rear end, but the D70 itself is a monster of an axle and utilizes 8 lugs. It's pretty much a dually only rear, too.

Re: Dana 70 in my 74?
As others have said, thats a standard 12 bolt. Not D70.

Re: Dana 70 in my 74?
that means it was cast in the 70's. not when it was built for your truck just when the housing was cast. u need to get more number off it to find out more info on your rear end, but it is a chevy 12 bolt rear end. same as a 4x4 axles just have to put 6 lug axles in it and it will work. they are a good axles to have.

Re: Dana 70 in my 74?
The factory 12 bolt in my 76 had GM73 cast into in and I had to replace it after getting rearended broke the housing. The 12 bolt I replaced it with has GM79 cast into it. Im guessing there were casting changes over the years and those are mold year dates.

Re: Dana 70 in my 74?
all dana axles run 10 bolts on the cover but not all 10 bolt axles are dana (gm 10 bolt, f*** 8.8 and so on)
heres a dana 70 in my 1980 cab and chassis the dana 70 is a bit taller then the gm 12 bolt
