700R4 Questions...
Have a question for those who have installed a 88-92 700R4...What ALL has to be changed to install the 700R4 into an 83 C10?....I found one rebuilt for $600, but the guy said it wouldn't work because it was electrically controlled, this is at a salvage yard, so knowlege is questionable..... I'm just trying to make sure it will work before I drop $600.00.........

NO 700R4 is electronically controlled. NONE. They changed the name to 4L60 and it was STILL not electronically controlled. Only 4L60E (the E is the key here!) was electronically controlled. Ask which one it is because all trannys are the same, jut one with elecronics.

The only thing electronically controlled in a 700R4 is the torque converter lock-up clutch. The lock-up solenoid gets it's signal from the VSS, or vehicle speed sensor through the ECM.
A Finnish guy made an add-in controller that greatly improves how the TCC engages and the vehicle speed needed to engage it. It requires basic electronics knowledge to build it, but it doesn't use any exotic components at all. I can post the schematics he made here if anyone's interested. I haven't had the time to build my own one yet, but since the cost is negligible i'll do it time permitting. -Axle

I should probably add that the TC lock-up of the 700R4 can be wired so that it only requires a 12+volt wire to the transmission, a normally closed brake switch and the TCC will lock up in 4th gear only. It's done with a grounding pressure switch on the 4th gear line in the valvebody. You can wire a switch in the +12v wire to have manual control of the lock-up.

I guess I should also mention that the truck currently has the stock 700r4 in it now, it's fried....Will I still need to do the wiring to get the 88-92 tranny to work in the my 83??? Wouldn't the 83 already have this wiring since it came with the 700r4???\
Thanks for the help....Hoping to get this thing going this weekend...

The controls will be the same. The electrical connection on the tranny will be the same too. If it isn't, that means it really is newer than 93 and is a 4L60E as someone mentioned above. If it's from a wrecking yard, how do you know it's rebuilt?

Joe, that's my question exactly.....I would require a warranty and I would pull the pan and take a look...I don't know how to rebuild transmissions, but I can tell when something has been apart and properly cleaned up....I still have a couple of more places to call tomorrow, but so far this is the best I've found....Hoping to get something done this weekend.... Thanks for the help....

Overall design: http://wwwk.heltech.edu.hel.fi/ideap...itys/lohko.jpg The first controller is designed to lock up the TCC based on vehicle speed (the desired speed can be altered by changing a single component in the PCB), and will not do anything else. It's the TCC/VSS module on the left lower corner marked with an asterisk *. The second controller takes into account the TPS signal and disengages the TCC to improve acceleration (at or above 30-40% of max. throttle), and also provides a 10 second delay after the brake pedal is released to re-engage the tcc (improves acceleration). It's the TCC relay module on upper right corner.
