No start quick question
Picked up a 87 burb, its a winter beater for now and eventually will be part of the cummins swap.
It will run when fuel is poured down the throttle body,but not on its own. Fuel pump is not running, can some one tell me what colors the wiring for the pump are so I can check for power. I'm trying to avoid dropping the tank some one has installed the skid from hell and I'm hoping not to drop the tank. any guidance would be appreciated. It is a 350 tbi. Thanks for any input. Keith |

It's one of the relays on the right side of the firewall just go under it and find the weather pack connection under around the fuel tank to the sender/pump check for 12 volts there that will tell you right away if its getting power or not you can also jump it with 12 volts there to see if pump kicks on

There should be a red wire that is not hooked to anything off the passenger side relay of the two previously mentioned. Hook a voltmeter to it and have someone turn the key forward without starting. You should see 12 volts come on that wire if it is a good relay. That tells you the pump is getting voltage sent to it. You should also check the grounds at the tank and see if they are good. If necessary, cut an access hole in the rear floor and patch it with a hatch of some kind. Then you can service the fuel pump without dropping the tank, this worked well in my friends 87 K5. Done right, that would blend in really well with the interior.
On the chance that the pump is bad, definitely spend the money on an AC Delco EP386 fuel pump. I tried to go the cheap route with my tbi 454 and did nothing but change them every couple months. Plus, the pressure delivered to the engine wasn't constant which made it a total pain to tune. The Delco pumps are worth the money. |

Thank you for the responses, very helpful! I was leaning towards ground. the fuel gauge is pegged way past full, hand is horizontal. If I have my head wrapped around it , Im thinking that means the circut is open. THe only way I can see a open circut to the fuel gauge is if the ground is disturbed. In my mind that is the only way the pump and the gauge could be affected , because they share the ground.

Got one step closer, ecm2 fuse blows when the relay powers up.
Anyone else encountered this? I not sure where to look next. Would it be be corrosion in the connections on top of the tank? Thanks again. Keith |

Yes, that happened to me. Change the relay. If it still happens, it is back to a ground issue. Except now you will have to check the insulation on the power wire for the sending unit in its entire length. This will probably require dropping the tank to make sure nothing chafed the wire around the rock shield or the top of the tank. While you are at it, re ground everything.

So I ws talking to my father about the possibility that it is a dead short , he suggested checking the load side of the fuse with a meter. If there is no resistance there is in fact a dead short to ground, but if the meter shows resistance it could be that the pump is seized. He said a pump will still show restance even if it is seized.
Looks like a way to nail down the problem. Thought this could help some one in the same situation. Keith |

my 87 4X4 got a nick in the power wire over the rear wheel well
replaced the pump and still got stranded,then i found the nic/hard baked and corroded for sure reground that tank,prob fix the gauge too
