Taking off glue/carpet on cab floor.... Sigh...
I pulled up my carpet to redo my cab mounts and put down dynamat. When I pulled it up I have glue across the entire floor and pieces of the original carpet/ fuzz stuck everywhere. The paint is original on the floor and in great shape so I would rather not take a wire brush to it and tear off all the paint. I know I could prob just dynamat over it but my OCD won't let me!
Anyone use a great chemical to take off sticky/43yr old hardened glue? Thanks for your time. Weev- Posted via Mobile Device

3m makes a pretty awesome adhesive remover, but if its bad it's probably still gonna take you some time with it and a wire brush
3M(TM) General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner...

goo gone is good stuff too, and easily available, but odds are its a 3m adhesive thats been laid down for the carpet, its what I have used in the past because its sprays exceptionally well from a cheap paint gun, and the 3m adhesive remover does a better job on that

I'd try mineral spirits/paint thinner first. It's much more gentle and less likely to affect the paint than Goo Gone. I've messed up some stuff with Goo Gone that mineral spirits would not have affected. Apply liberally and give it time to work. I would not use a wire brush either. May take several applications.

Too bad somebody did that. I don't think the factory ever did that. I could be wrong. Good luck with it..

Anything that chemically removes that old glue will very likely remove the paint as well. Try Acetone or Lacquer Thinner, maybe Naphtha in the form of lighter fluid? WD-40? You can always opt for Methyl Ethyl Ketone or Brake Clean, and dont rule out the Carburetor Cleaner. Most of the above will render your "OCD" quite secondary in the realm of health & disorder issues. Thats to say nothing of the flammable and explosive environment created inside the cab. Heres a healthy idea...Dust Mask, Z-87 Safety Glasses, and the Wire Wheel followed up with some touch up paint?

If you don't want to remove the paint as you say, do not use lacquer thinner or acetone. I believe methyl ethyl ketone will also remove the paint. WD-40, naphtha and lighter fluid should be safe to use. The paint thinner and mineral spirits I mentioned in my post above are safe, relatively inexpensive, not very volitile and readily available at Home Depot, Lowes and your local hardware store.

I would assume someone used commercial carpet glue. There are some removers out there for that, but they don't work that great. I know you don't want to here this but a razor scraper is probably the only thing that will get rid of it.

Re: Taking off glue/carpet on cab floor.... Sigh...
Well... it's not looking good. Tried the 3M remover and it was like wiping water on the floor... the goo gone was ok but takes about 30 minutes for a silver dollar size clean area.
I just pulled out the 4" angle grinder with a stainless steel twisted wire brush on it... I will just have to wipe the floor clean when I am done getting the glue off and put down some good rust preventor before the dynamat. Thanks for everyones input. Just too big of a area I guess. Weev-

WD40 works well. If not use XYLENE but wear gloves and a resperator mask. Some stuff comes right off with a heat gun as well.

Re: Taking off glue/carpet on cab floor.... Sigh...
I just went through this a few days ago. Dynamat and thick fuzzy backing. Pulled hard to peel off carpet and was left with a 1" fuzz layer. I spent three hours using a razor blade and finger pressure. left some remining fuzz here and there but used glue with the new carpet from acc and it fit like a glove.

WD-40 it will remove most anything. Let it have time to work!
