16 Gallon Saddle tank

I bought a 16 gallon saddle tank for my '79 truck. The brackets are non existent, I tried salvage yards and gm dealers and found nothing. Is there a site that sells them? I was on classic parts and found a rear bracket for the saddle tank. Is there a different between the front and rear bracket? A bolt on frame one please. If you can please provide a link to the site or the product itself.

-thanks.

Re: 16 Gallon Saddle tank

GM had the Brackets with straps 7 years ago when I replaced mine. I believe the difference between the 16 gallon and the 20 gallon is the location on the frame. The brackets should be the same.
Look in the classifieds section for someone parting a truck and ask about the tank brackets.

Re: 16 Gallon Saddle tank

I looked over LMC and many other sites. Classic auto sells the rear, but personally I don't see a difference between the 2.

Re: 16 Gallon Saddle tank

The tank brackets are different in height, filler end of tank is a few inches taller.

Ya i bought a set off a crew cab yesterday and was driving home and all the sudden I'm like crap one bracket is supposed to be higher then the other....Oh well hopefully i can maybe cut that part off the old one and weld it together as a rust free set of those are quite hard to find around here.

Re: 16 Gallon Saddle tank

These were off a crew cab...wasn't even thinking about the frame being straight where the tank bolts on . It's just a farm truck so will make them work somehow. The brackets, gas tank and sending unit don't look like they are a year old and came with half a tank of gas for $50

Re: 16 Gallon Saddle tank

Do yourself a favour and put some pads on the straps or tank (I used dynamat sound deadner) to prevent squeaks. The new tanks I bought didn't have any rubber bonded to them.

Re: 16 Gallon Saddle tank

Yeah ours did not come with rubber either, there's a thread on people using different material from home. Not sure where it is. Was it pretty cheap?

Also I found a thread similar to this but I looked at the date and it was 5+ years old! I checked there sites and they don't carry 'em.

@88Jimmy4x4 Thanks for the thread that will really come in handy.

Re: 16 Gallon Saddle tank

Also, there are left and right bracket( for the 87 at least). I just learned that. I tried installing a left side bracket on the right side, and no go.... The passenger and drivers side are identical except the mounting threads. I am taking allot of pictures of what i am doing so will post soon....

oh almost forgot.... I took the bracket off a 20 gallon tank, so the 16 gallon are the same... i got the brackets that have the stud, so i can install the tank skid shields

You can either use sound deadening material from your local auto parts store (usually not worth the price) or you can stop at a home improvement store and they sell this adhesive asphalt paper with an aluminum backing. Basically the same stuff. I bought a roll (16' I think) for under $25. I stuck it to the straps themselves and zapped them with a heat gun to melt the asphalt. Stuff is never coming off.

You can use anything for an anti-squeek pad, rubber strips, inner tube, roofing tar paper etc.

Since I ordered new filler hoses from LMC, I bought their anti squeek kit for $10, but its just roofing tar paper like you used which appears to be what factory used by comparing old to new.

Re: 16 Gallon Saddle tank

These tank threads couldn't have more perfect timing. I have to add the passenger's side tank back on after a previous owner removed it. I wish he would have left the brackets though, those things sell like hotcakes!

Re: 16 Gallon Saddle tank

I called classicparts.com and I asked about the front bracket because it did not show up. Here they must have bought all of them from the dealer and now they are all sold out, 2 weeks ago. Guess I'm outta luck hehe, if anyone has passenger side brackets for sale for a 16 gallon please message me.

-Thanks
